Personally, as you are all Australian I would obtain METV's from The Thai Embassy there. You can make them work for 9 Months if you work them right then you could go to an adjoining Country after and apply for Tourist Visa's for the remainder of the time you are there. I would also ask your Embassy and give them the scenario as they maybe able to offer a better solution.
