Hi

I have received

my NON-O retirement Visa and will be leaving on the 11 of Dec 25

To Bangkok Thailand

I have secured a condo

For a year s lease

And will take the necessary docs to immigration and then to a Bank to open a Bank Account my question is what steps to take to deposit the required monies into the new Thai bank after opening this bank account

I can have the required monies

Sent directly to bank in Thailand thru USA bank

But that would take some time

Hours days ? does bank allowed

Time for monies to transfer

As I would not have the required deposit on my person

Please advise as to how to

Accomplish this task

Thanks

TLDR : Answer Summary
The user has a NON-O retirement visa and is preparing to move to Bangkok. They have secured a condo and are seeking advice on depositing the required funds into a Thai bank account after opening it. They inquire about the transfer time for sending money from a U.S. bank to Thailand and how to manage this process, especially considering they may not have the required deposit amount readily available during their arrival.
NON-O RETIREMENT VISA RESOURCES / SERVICES
  • Go to the Retirement Visa Section for information on requirements, including age restrictions, financial requirements, and necessary documentation.
  • For immediate assistance, contact Thai Visa Centre directly via LINE at @ThaiVisaCentre or Email them.
  • Explore recent discussions by using the Non-O Retirement Visa tag in the search box at the top of the page.

Most people use Wise because of their low fees and mid-market forex rates for the 800K transfer. You could also do a Swift transfer but you're at the mercy of the banks forex rates. Depending on the office you are using you might have to prove that the money came from abroad which is no problem using Swift but you have to make sure you have the right flags/reason for transfer if you're using Wise.

Set up a Schwab or chase checking account in the your home country… fund it with some cash… when you get to Thailand hit the ATM and withdraw 30k in baht… no fees as the refund them to you… now you have cash to set up your Thai bank account. Once setup … link the Schwab account and transfers take a day or 2 no charge.

Schwab got into my transitory life style, with a mailing service, and refused to open me an account. Fidelity provides fee free withdrawals too, but I have an account with them already!

I would tell you if you are comfortable carrying some cast with you to convert at a Super Rich — bring clean, unmarked $100 bills to exchange.

I transferred money from two banks I use in the U.S. Using Remitly which seems to offer really good exchange rates and transfer fee was $1.99 per transaction . But I was limited by how much I could transfer using my ATM card which allowed instantaneous transfers. Using my atm from stateside bank money moved with minutes. But for me using a transfer from bank account would have been three to five days.

I second Kasikorn bank and have my required money there for my 12month extension and use Kungsri for monthly account

if you don’t have a bank which reimburses atm fees I would recommend getting one — many use a Shwab account.

Is that the one you should get multiple reentry on if you travel a lot?

I wire transfer from my US bank to my Thai bank. It typically takes 24-36 hrs for the money to show up in my Thai bank account. Note though that banks in the US and Thailand won't process the transfer on weekends and holidays and that there is a 12 hr time difference between the US and Thailand. That can increase the time to transfer. That has been my experience the past few years.

Some people have set up a "wise" account before they leave their country. Then they transfer the money into that and when the account is opened add the money to the account via wise and it appears within hours. I have used it after i opened mine appeared within hours but was smaller amount and significantly less fees. I set up my kasikorn account with 1000 baht deposit only to open it.

Most banks would want some cash deposit like 3kthb or 5kthb, the other can follow. Aviod Bangkok bank if your going to get a visa extension, there too much trouble, KBank is a good bank.

Kbank did not accept my wise transfer from US with correct notation for Thai immigration, so I sent to Bangkok bank after the account was unfrozen. My Swift transfer cost 2000baht at a reduced exchange rate, Wise was 500baht fee. I was told only 8 banks in Thailand are authorized to do Swift. That makes sense with the horrendous fees!!!

well it just happened that I had to call kbank so I asked them about Wise/Swifts they said there should be no problem they are one of the nominated Thai banks to receive Wise tranfers, although, they said customers told them that Wise puts a limit on how much you can send, so I'm not sure what happened, did you call thier call centre to find out? Bangkok bank has a International department that when I sent a wise payment to them they help me sort it out. Wonder if KBank offer the same. The thing with Bangkok bank, is with a non o where you need to hold the money for 2 months BB want to hold it 4 months to let you have bank balance certificate.

I have not called the bank because the notation put on the deposit was such that it appeared to be an internal Thailand transfer not an international transfer. after I unfroze my Bangkok bank account I sent another wise deposit from the States to my account there and it was correctly noted again. problem solved? My swift transfer to Siam Commercial Bank is requiring an additional piece of paperwork and that is good because my account with Bangkok Bank was closed all of September and I want to move over to the monthly deposit method for my non-O visa.
