What should I know about obtaining a DTV visa for mental health treatment in Thailand?

Hi everyone,

I’m planning to move to Thailand on the DTV softpower within the next 2 months and would really appreciate any advice or recommendations from those who’ve gone through the process recently.

We are moving from Ireland and I’m specifically seeking mental health support in Bangkok. I have a CPTSD diagnosis and will need longer-term treatment ideally with a psychiatrist or counsellor who has experience in trauma and expat care. Also needs to be in English.

Has anyone here been granted a DTV visa for reasons related to mental health treatment? I’d love to hear about your experience if you’re comfortable sharing. Any hospital or clinic recommendations (public or private) and specific doctors you’ve found helpful would be amazing.

Also, my partner is applying as well, and is looking for recommendations for Muay Thai training in Bangkok.

Thanks so much in advance and I’m looking forward to hearing from you all.

TLDR : Answer Summary
A user is planning to move to Thailand under the DTV soft power visa and is seeking advice on mental health support options in Bangkok, specifically for long-term treatment of CPTSD. They ask for experiences related to obtaining a DTV visa for mental health treatment and recommendations for therapists and clinics. The community response includes advice on financial requirements for the visa, potential difficulties in securing a visa for mental health reasons, therapist recommendations, and suggestions for Muay Thai training.

Medical route isn't very popular as it is, and no one here to my knowledge has reported a successful application with mental treatment. You could always try and email an embassy you are planning to apply to with this specific question (if this treatment would be accepted as a 'soft power').

Has anyone been granted a DTV visa for reasons related to mental health treatment ? As far as I recall, no one has reported getting a visa for that specific reason. Let’s see if others can suggest an English language trained psychiatrist who deals with CPTSD

hi. I did see a post a long time ago on this group of someone who had but now can’t find it.

From the criteria it looks like you can. But I would like to chat to someone who perhaps has managed it before applying.

I have my fingers crossed

sorry that was meant to be a reply to someone who said no chance. You can definitely get it, but just need to find the right hospital. I know it’s not that popular but possible with cash

Have you already found a therapist? My friend is currently looking for similar and English speaking, good therapists are often booked up.

hi. No not of yet. If your or your friend have any advice either on here or a DM I’d be very grateful. I’ve been to Thailand many times but only as a tourist so this is all very new to us.

Yes i always tell people to keep the story simple. From a medical standpoint i dont understand how someone would qualify for dtv based on the assumption nobody wants to be sick or having treatment that long. Maybe im missing something again this is out of my scope so maybe others can help him🙏

i dont have much knowledge about medical routes but if you have the 500k money and the financials in order i would look into the other softs options where there is more data and stories and apply via the gym classes cooking etc or something. I really dont understand how a medical case would entitle someone to come to thailand for 5 years unless you had a medical condition that requires treatement for that long of a timeframe. Please dont take my comment the wrong way im happy if you are able to use that route i just dont have much information to help you. Still if this does not work the dtv is so broad im sure you will find a way to fit in as long as your financials are in order. Good luck to you 🙏

lol what? A registered hospital will most likely be able to provide supporting documents on a DTV for this.
