What should I know about extending my DTV visa and dealing with Bangkok Immigration?

Just sharing my experience today at Bangkok Immigration in case it's useful to other DTV holders.

I went in to transfer my DTV stamp into a new passport and also had to pay a fine for a missed 90-day report. The whole process took quite a while, so be prepared for a long day if you're doing both.

What surprised me was when I asked about extending my DTV for another 6 months. As I'm on the business owner/workcation category, I was told I would need to provide quite a substantial portfolio of supporting documents, including:

Business documentation

Bank statements

Invoices

Evidence of ongoing business activity

Proof of 500,000 baht in my bank account for the previous 30 days

The officer then told me that an alternative would simply be to leave Thailand and re-enter, which would avoid the need for the extension application and supporting portfolio.

One other thing worth mentioning: I made the mistake of turning up in shorts. I've been coming to Thailand for 25 years and somehow forgot the importance of dressing smartly when dealing with government offices. The officer was not impressed and gave me a fairly stern lecture about it. Fair enough — lesson learned. Next time it'll be long trousers and a collared shirt.

Just posting this in case it helps anyone else planning a DTV extension in Bangkok. Has anyone else had a similar experience recently?

I got refused exiting by land because i did not cancel my Non O visa first. If you are on a tourist visa you dont have any troubles.

you won't be stopped from exiting Thailand but you maybe denied entry. Airports are the same as land borders and you run the risk of being denied entry and arrested. They will put you in detention and fly you back to your home country at your expense. Here's just on example. There's a part 2 as well.

Good luck

If you have overstayed you can be held until the fine is paid. If you refuse to pay the fine then you won’t be going anywhere.

But the check for issues possibly arising from multiple entries only happens when entering.

Unsure why you would even ask the question?

Why would they make it difficult to leave the country . If you've had to many visa runs they'll be happy to get rid of you and won't let you back.

No country will refuse your exit unless you have a warrant. Mater of fact if you have too many board runs they want you to leave!!! Use your critical thinking!

MagentaZebra5680 They only forbid you to leave at that exit, you can leave the country through other exits.

They do deny land exit as well… I’ve seen it. I’m not sure why the couple was denied but going into Laos from Nong Khai I have witnessed them denying exit. I agree with John’s comment if you can show why you are leaving and tell them you’re not returning they’ll likely let you leave. Also you never know they might not even give you any issues at all, however it does happen.

If refused land border exit witch can happen but very unlikely you will need to depart by air thru higher immigration officers

Even if your Passport has free Visa Exemption Entry into Laos (Belarus, Luxembourg, Russia, Switzerland, Korea, Mongolia, Japan, ASEAN countries), or perhaps already have a Lao eVisa Approval Letter PDF File, or, even intending to get a Lao Visa on Arrival (Lao VoA), probably best to get an actual Lao Visa full page sticker from the Lao Consulate in Khon Kaen or Lao Embassy in WangThongLang วังทองหลาง (Bangkok) beforehand to help assuage Nong Khai Thai Immigration Officers (or any Land Border with Laos) to let you Exit Thailand
