What should I consider when traveling back to Thailand after staying for more than 180 days?

I've been in Thailand comfortably more than 180 days.

I never heard about this concern before but seems its a big thing at the moment.

I am flying out to Macau on Friday and planning to return the same day. I'm flying in to (and out of) Chiang Mai and landing around 23:00.

I'm definitely going to take the 20k Baht in cash with me. Still, am I completely screwed or do you guys think I will make it back into the country?

If they don't allow me back in, what are my options? Can I then still get a tourist visa or do I need to do something else to get back in? Ed visa?

Thanks in advance.

UPDATE: got proof of onward travel, will take the 20k cash and rental receipt along. Seems that,, and not looking like a vagabond is the best I can do.

TLDR : Answer Summary
The user is concerned about re-entering Thailand after spending more than 180 days in the country. They plan to travel to Macau and return the same day, taking necessary documents such as proof of onward travel, rental receipt, and 20,000 Baht in cash. Community responses highlight that while there’s no strict limit on days spent in Thailand, previous visa history can lead to additional scrutiny at immigration. Tips are provided to minimize suspicion, and suggestions are made regarding how to handle the situation if denied entry.

and on this note we're done. The O/P has enough information to decide how to proceed..

Thanks everyone. I have a bus ticket to Penang, my receipt for rent paid, and I'll have the

B in cash on me (did I just put a target on my back for pick pocketing?). Guess I just have to be friendly and hope for the best. I am landing at 23:00-ish. Could work for or against me as well. Hopefully my next update is not from a detention room :)

If they dont let you in, which is highly unlikely then you'll be sent back to where you came from

ตนลสกพ ดหพีย thanks for detailed information. I guess if I have proof of onward travel, rent in chiang mai and the money in cash there isn't much I can do except be friendly and hope for the best. Sawadeee Krap 🙏

Thanks :) Not super excited about spending more time in Macau than absolutely necessary. Do you have an idea what my options will be from there? Get a tourist visa? Or will that be refused for the same reason?

For a start, remove "lives in Chiang Mai" from your Facebook page. This is the first thing they'll look at if you come under suspicion.

Several people in the past, who've been pulled up at immigration, have "live in ...". No wonder they are suspicious!

Not sure why you are worried about 180 days, there is no limit on days you can stay inside Thailand. But having an history of Visa Exempts and Tourist Visa makes the chance bigger to get questioned at Immigation. Make sure you have the 20k Thb in cash, accommodation and proof on onward travel with you.

Thanks! Ok, I thought that you can only do 180 days per year. I have been doing visa exemption all year - building up the courage to commit to a year of learning Thai.

I have an apartment in Chiang Mai. I can take my rental contract there. Hopefully I can also find an onward ticket that I can cancel again.

And then finally sort out the education visa.
