What is the process for obtaining a Digital Nomad Visa (DTV) in Thailand after using an ED Visa?

a day ago
Just came back to Thailand from Cambodia on my new DTV. Some might be interested as I was on ED visa previously.

I applied as a freelancer. Provided business registration, contract with my main client (translated in english), 6 month of invoices for this client (in english) 6 month of bank statements with highlighted payments from this client, and 6 month of saving accounts statements with the required funds. As a reference, my income is low, few hundred euros per month, but steady.

Also added an export of my linkedin profile in english, a capture of my profesional website, and a letter stating my expertise and current activities.

It took exactly 10 business days for me to get approved, not counting the day I submitted. Went to pending approval on day 2. Got approved on business day 11, late afternoon. No update in the middle whatsoever.

Printed my DTV. Came back the day after through DMK (not BKK). Paid extra for fast pass as some here suggested it might be smoother.

Handed my passport to the (female) officer (some seem to think it makes a difference) with printed DTV.

She did not mention at all my ED visa current extension and related stamp of re-entry permit. She did not try to test my thai language.

Just asked me what I was doing, I said I work online for a company in my country. She asked if I got the money in my country. I said yes.

She checked some kind of unidentified logbook, then proceeded to stamp me in for 6 month.

Finally free from the ED golden cage, at least until immigration starts not liking DTV for some random reasonπŸ™

Any question let me know, and good luck everyone 🀞

Thanks a lot for the sharing πŸ˜ŠπŸ™.

I have a question, I was on ED visa too last year and right now on exemption visa after a trip, I rent a House here in Chiang mai for more than a year now and would like to know as you were already on ED visa before if you registered and address in Thailand or in your country when you filed for the DTV ?

Okay so I'm not sure I understand the question fully, but I was in Thailand on my ED and renting a place before I went to Cambodia basically on vacation.

I put the address of my place in thailand, but I never provided any proof of this, and I could have put any random hotel it would have been the same, at least in Cambodia, as some embassies weirdly seems to ask for proof of accommodation. At least this is my understanding.

Remember on paper it's not a Visa for people already living in Thailand, but for people that would like to come later.

thanks again πŸ˜ŠπŸ™. I just heard that they asked you the current address where you are leaving before applying to the visa (so for most people that will be in their home country) but as I’m in Thailand for most than a year I worried to register my rented house in Thailand in the file πŸ™

Technically, they ask you for two addresses.

1) Your permanent address in your home country.

2) Your address in the country you go apply for the DTV (So basically your hotel or something)

Then on another page, they ask your "intended address in thailand", but I believe you really put whatever you want in there.

I would definitely put an address in your country of origin, matching your passport, in home address. I would not put a Thai address.

Hello, thanks for sharing your experience. You said you provided the contract with your main client translated in English. Did you translate it yourself and annexed it to the original contract or was it certified translation? Thanks a lot πŸ™πŸ»

Participant anonyme 627 I litterally opened it with google doc and did an automated translation. Then I included only this translation in the PDF. Invoices however were already in english.

Why would the gender of the officer matter? πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ

Participant anonyme 154 Haha I don't know fellow anonymous person, no idea, but I just read this quite a few times here, so I mention it because people say "avoid female officers" for some reason.

Oh, that's very helpful, thank you. πŸ™πŸΌ

So you don't have to worry that there might be problems if they see that you have already worked on an ED Visa? Because actually it's not allowed, right?!

@Maja *******
Well they technically don't know if you've worked or not on your ED visa. They do not have access to the whole file you sent to the embassy.

For all they know you could have suspended your activity while on ED, and just signed a new contract and decided to ask for DTV for example.

Yes for sure, as an officer I would think no less, but maybe remote work for foreign companies is not something they really care about on TR/ED. At least it feels so. Like they're kinda just making it explicit with the DTV.

Thanks a lot for this pretty helpful report! πŸ™

So you used regular fast track and not safe entry?

For 4.5K baht you go through no questions asked.

@Sean ******
waste of money if on a fresh DTV

@Jack *******
I never used it I just asked if they did. However the chap who was previously on an Ed visa and had to pay 20K entry fee at swampy probably wished he used it.

@Sean ******
he was probably trying to enter on a visa exempt boy

Wrong, DTV boy.

Yes I just basically took the fast track option on my Airasia flight, as I needed to pay for extra carry on anyways and it was packaged with it, tbe fast track itself cost me around 1000 thb.

No idea if it had any impact on the officer's behavior though.
