Just a report about process at Chiang Rai Immigration: :

ED-Visa would have been expired 28th October. IO said that there is no possibility to extend the ED Visa within the kingdom.

So ED Visa was cancelled and new application was for 60 days COVID extension.

Immigration asked for copies of rental contract and passport only.

Got stamped in ' under consideration' until 11th November. Officer confirmed that extension will be 60 days.

Costs: the usual THB 1'900,-.

All quite straightforward and surprisingly simple compared to ED-Visa extensions with tons of paperwork.

TLDR : Answer Summary
The report outlines a recent experience at Chiang Rai Immigration regarding the process for extending an ED Visa. The visa was set to expire on October 28th and could not be extended within Thailand. Instead, a new application for a 60-day COVID extension was submitted, requiring only copies of the rental contract and passport. The application was marked as 'under consideration' until November 11th, with a confirmed extension period of 60 days at a cost of THB 1,900. Comparatively, the process was described as straightforward and less complicated than ED Visa extensions, which typically involve more documentation.

I think what that officer was telling you was you used all the time you were allowed on this current ED visa/extension and you couldn't get any more extension time out of it. :/

Thanx for the update, report back on the 11th and let people know how it worked out.

Nowadays it is hard to grasp what is 'correct' or 'right'. Immigration included in the 12 month period of the ED Visa the 2 months of the tourist visa. So it was not possible to do 4x90 days fully. The limitation to one year seemed to be relevant because of the initial tourist visa.

Yes, because it was a former 2 months tourist visa that was converted to an ED-Visa. That's why no more possibility to extend within the country. Would have been different if the ED-VISA would have been issued abroad.

no, that's not it at all. :/ An ED visa is an ED visa no matter where you got it (inside or outside) the country.

IF you were still on the 90 day stamp you got from the in country ED visa you could have gotten documentation from the school you're enrolled in and applied for a 90 day extension.
