Answer summary
Several recent experiences highlight the process of doing a DTV visa run from Chiang Khong to Huay Xai, Laos. Familiarity with the Chiang Khong border helps, as others have noted difficulties at different borders. It is generally expected that a two-night stay in Laos is necessary before returning if you want a clean visa run. There are also specific requirements for currency exchange and fees, such as the visa on arrival fee for Laos which is around 1800 THB, plus additional fees for not having a photo ready.

Did it last year. You can buy fresh dollars from the photo counter at the border. You need to spend at least 2 nights in Laos before heading back if I remember correctly.
I think Chiang Khong might be easier. I’ve seen people in the group post about going there before, so it seems like they’re more familiar with the process.
Last week, my family and I went to Chiang Saen to cross into Laos, just for tourism. We went there and came back on the same day. The officers didn’t seem to believe what I was telling them at all. They seemed to think we were trying to do a visa run and kept coming up with different reasons and making the process very difficult.
And on the way back, we had another problem. They told us that we couldn’t return on the same day and that we had to stay overnight in Laos, or submit the documents again, like we had done before when we went to Laos.
But my wife argued with them and explained that we weren’t doing a visa run. DTV visa still had another 2–3 months left, and we were simply there as tourists. After that he quite and let’s the young man do it.
