TLDR : Answer Summary
For easy land border runs from Bangkok, travelers often recommend Cambodia, specifically avoiding the Poipet border due to its complications. Agencies frequently offer trips for a quick border run to Cambodia, allowing for a same-day trip. Alternatively, the sleeper train to Malaysia is noted as a hassle-free option, especially for EU passport holders. Another option is the night train to Vientiane, Laos, which recently opened its borders with a 15-day visa-free stay for certain European nationalities. Travelers should also be cautious about entry limits into countries for visa-exempt travelers.

Poi pet was so easy. We took a train from Bangkok then a bus from the border to siem reap. We stayed in Cambodia for a month then came back to Bangkok. We also have taken the train to Malaysia and really love that too

What nationalities are your referring to? I am pretty sure that with my passports (German) there is no visa-free entry into Laos. 🇱🇦

From 1 July 2024, travelers from eight European countries can enjoy visa-free entry to Laos. Under the new policy, passport holders from Austria, Spain, Belgium, Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Finland and Greece do not need to apply for a visa on arrival in Laos. These nationalities will instead be granted a visa waiver, allowing them to stay for up to 15 days. The new policy, announced by Laos' Ministry of Public Security, aims to simplify the entry process and make Laos a more accessible destination for European explorers.

Interesting. Yet unusual choice of participating countries.

That could be a great onward ticket choice from Bangkok.

Aren't you only allowed 2 entrys per year? I believe I read that I may be wrong
Steve **********
@John ******
I heard 2 entrys per year as well

@John ******
2 land border runs per year. BUT, there has been evidence today that this long standing policy may be bending to allow more
Brandon ************
@John ******
normally 2 times per year you can enter visa exempt at a land border. But there's been a report today about someone being told that limit is now gone with the 60 day visa exempt and they did their 3rd entry for the year.

@Brandon ***********
Thats wellpapp done if they got new visa exempts 3 times after their 60 days permission which startet last Monday ;)
Bonnie *******
@Brandon ***********
really? That would be fantastic

Sleeper Train to Malaysia was pretty easy and the visa exempt is free , at least for eu passport

@Conny *********
Inexpensive too. Plus plenty of sight-seeing included.

Passports are country specific not EU so entry requirements depend on the country of issue
Conny **********
@Graham *****
Yes. Are you missing any Eu countries in the 60 days List?

Graham ******
@Conny *********
The old 63 country list did not include all EU country passports but my point is there is no EU passport, the new 93 list includes countries not "the EU"
Conny **********
@Graham *****
ok I am too lazy to write down all the 93 countries that from 150 July have 60 days...
Brandon ************
Cambodia. Many land border agencies will drive you there departing early in the morning and have you back for dinner.

Rumors are that the prices are going up with the change from 30 to 60 days on visa exempt though.

Avoid Poipet border at all costs. It's so problematic that agencies won't even use it.
Tim *******
@Brandon ***********
You r 100% correct about Poipet…there r a few female border agents who will make your attempt to re enter Thailand a living hell.

@Brandon ***********
Myanmar border crossing via Kanchanaburi is the closest one from Bangkok.
Brandon ************
@Max ************
closed borders don't help much

@Brandon ***********
Is Phu Nam Ron border crossing closed?
Brandon ************
@Max ************
all land border crossings with Myanmar are closed to foreigners. The only Myanmar border that's available is Ranong and that requires a boat trip.

Don’t waste time on bus or train.

Tickets to Malaysia and back are much cheaper though.
