Hello, I wanted to ask which of the 4 routes I should take with my car from Pattaya to Udon Thani. It's my birthday in a few days and we're visiting Udon Thani. Thanks

TLDR : Answer Summary
This discussion provides various route options for driving from Pattaya to Udon Thani, focusing on safety, road conditions, and scenic value. Suggestions include taking the Motorway 7 around Bangkok for a faster journey, or opting for more scenic routes via Highway 304 through Prachin Buri and Nakhon Ratchasima. Traffic conditions, flood warnings, and scenic stops, including potential delays due to construction and local driving habits, are also highlighted as important considerations for travelers.

Take the scenic 9 hour 12 min. Lovely scenic drive.

I recommend to take the route via the outskirts of Bangkok and turning right at Saraburi - much better roads including the new motorway that bypasses Korat, which is still very quiet and (at least until a few weeks ago) doesn't have speed cameras installed yet - I often drive that way (from Bangkok) to Isarn, and can normally cut 1.5 hours to 2 hours off the Google estimated time - the other routes include alot of crappy roads

I prefer the Chaiyaphum route, it is more rural. However, you need to check Google for flood warnings regardless of which route you take. Chanoegsao is nice,

I would stay clear of the BKK hinterland on any route - presumably you have Google set up on a data plan? It's not the fastedt but you get to see more Thailand

Floods permitting I would go.

Chachoengsao

Chaiyaphum

Udon Thani.

When I drove from Phuket to Udon Thani I just followed the fastest route that Google maps gave me and it worked out fine.

Avoid the road which still have flooding! Check the update weather forecast too before you start the journey. Google map does show the affected roads.

Done That route a few Times but not recently enough to be up on traffic

Prima. La strada n3 poi la 331 poi ti immetti nella 304 fino a Korat , poi sempre dritto sulla N2. Fino all'arrivo , fatta diverse volte !!!

Its a nicer journey if you cut though the national park

You’ve really got two choices here:

1. Take Motorway 7 to Bangkok, then use the ring road Motorway 9, going counterclockwise around the city, Bang Pa In direction. Get onto Highway 1 to pass through Ayutthaya and hit Saraburi. From there, use Mittraphap Road (Highway 2) to Nakhon Ratchasima, and keep going to Udon Thani. If Motorway 6 is open, definitely take it, it’s partially open but it’s a lifesaver time-wise. Keep a few hundred on hand for tolls.

Watch out between Saraburi and Pak Chong, Nakhon Ratchasima - people drive like absolute dumb cunts, plus you’ve got mountains and heaps of heavy trucks.

2. Alternatively, take Highway 304 through Prachinburi, which links up with Nakhon Ratchasima, then keep going on Mittraphap (2) to Udon Thani. Be careful in Prachinburi though, the roads are shit, and there are mountains to deal with too.

If it were me, I’d go with the 7 and 9 around Bangkok, stop for an hour in Nakhon Ratchasima to check out Ya Mo Monument. I also prefer driving at night - less congestion and fewer fuckwits on the road, the fewer, the better.

+1

I would do that too.

Much more relaxed to stay on the big high speed roads than going over the hills near khao yai (some would call them mountains, but I grew up just beside the alps, so it’s just hills ;) )

From Pattaya take Huay Yai road to the 331 and follow this number change to 304 to Korat then straight to Khon kean

Don't drive

you can try parts of the new M6 highway.. beautiful and faster
Claus *********
but will require to go via Saraburi

Once you reach Nakhon Ratchasima look for signs to Khon Khen once you reach Khon Khen you can't go wrong. Try get some information regarding the flooding.

Not sure if the route you take goes through the Khao Yai National Park or around it.

Im guessing it goes through so you will cross directly from Prachinburi to Pak Chong (Nakhon Ratchasima) and then just keep going straight.

Anyway, just letting you know that to enter the park foreigners pay $400baht cash for each person.

@Gian ******
the route doesn't go into the national park, just nearby
Andy *********
Done that route highlighted many times to Khon Kaen - more relaxed than the other routes and over the hills lovely views and stopping places 👍
Sylvia ********
Route 2 is easiest but ensure you take ring road around the cities like Korat .
Sylvia ********
Not sure how construction is going near Chachoengsao but 331 is more scenic although has traffic lights compared to using motorway out of pattaya
Nicholas *********
Take longest
Rick *********
I use google map, check before starting out and it will find the fastest route. It can change throughout the day depending on construction etc. it will even give an option to revise a faster route on the way.

Prachin Buri, nakhorn ratchasima, khon kaen.

Take Care in the montain before arrive nakhorn ratchasima. They Like make Speed Check this Place.
Khalil ************
From Bangkok go Nakhon Ratchasima then forward to khon khaen be careful of the route between Bangkok and saraburi the drivers are crazy too many accidents these period of time
