TLDR : Answer Summary
Traveling to Thailand can be an amazing experience, but it's important to be aware of cultural nuances and potential scams. Key advice includes learning some basic Thai phrases, staying hydrated with bottled water, and being cautious with local transportation. Avoid renting jet skis due to common scam allegations and always insist on taxi meters to prevent overcharging. Understanding local customs, such as the implications of certain words or phrases and showing respect to the Thai people, will enhance your experience. Make sure to plan your finances wisely and keep an eye on your belongings, especially in busy areas.

Learn a bit about Thai culture BEFORE you come. Learn a little Thai. Please, thank-you, you are welcome and the use of Kaa or Khrup. Leave any of your cultural judgments back at home. Don't be a cheap-skate or an asshat. Be aware of taxi/tuk tuk scams. Don't rent jet skis. Drink moderately or you may do things you will regret. Don't be a monger, and no they don't love you. Don't try to save money by taking buses/trains when traveling around Thailand wasting valuable time. Local airfare is extremely affordable. Agoda is a awesome application to find great hotel and airfare deals. Slow down! Don't try to plan each outing down to the smallest detail. Relax, take the road less traveled. Cash is king. Wear a helmet if you are on a scooter. Going to rent a scooter? Be sure to have a international driver license or you just might help out the local police to finance their lunches. One of my favorite places is Erawan park. Make the effort and hike all the way to the top at Erawan falls! Don't forget to rent or bring a life preserver at the start so you can swim! The Andaman coastal area is home to places that defy description. Enjoy.. don't rush. You can come back to Thailand for a lifetime of vacations and still not experience it all.
Chris *********
Don't accept food or drinks from random strangers. Don't use taxis waiting outside hotels, use GRAB taxi app or flag one down. Only take new ALTIS model taxis, same fare as older ones which often have crap AC. Always insist on using the meter, don't accept a stated fare. If at the beach, we VERY wary of renting a jet ski. Fake damage scams abound. Don't be a mask-hole, we have to live here
Colin ***************
Learn from your mistakes, not ours. Cheers
Merv ***********
THat's quite true.
Max ***********
Don't be a smartass and respect the Thai people, you'll have a great time. Remember sa wah Di Karp and kob khun Karp. Greeting and thank you and they respect that. Enjoy yourself it's a great place.

You can use Grab App to order a taxi, food and some supermarket items.

Keep tissues or paper toilet with you.

Cash, hat, sunblock.

Floating market: they really want you to support the locals, don't ask if you won't buy as you will break their heart, they really need to sell, there are no many tourists around.

Support the locals!!! 🙌

Tours on internet are not the cheapest, so ask locals too.

You don't need a tour for the train market and floating market, a private driver it's only £40

Let the locals draw in your map new places to visit, a guy even draw the smile buda and the tall buda, so cute! I didn't plan anything in Bangkok and locals were so kind advising us. We had an amazing time and could do a marathon thanks to that.
Maria *******************************
Keep empty bottles in the airport. In BKK in the departure section, they sell drinks but they have a security check just before the gate. Ridiculous. I had to put the new drinks in the bin, but they have free water and machine to buy bottles near the seats.

The paper toilet is in the dinning table of street restaurants. I found that hilarious after struggling so much without paper toilet in the toilets! We girls go a lot 😅

In China town loads of people ask for money/food in the streets, that breaks my heart, so I had food in my bag and was giving that instead of money.

Don't touch a Thai on his head. Don't use your feet to point. Don't disrespect the king. Don't get into a taxi until they agree to meter. Pre-quoted prices are always more expensive.

Make sure you have some knowledge of public transport for the city you are travelling to it will make your trip alot easier. Know routes of baht buses and song theaws. For the most part it's not necessary to get taxis unless late at night.last time I was there hua hin had a green songtheuw that covered a fair portion of the city for fifteen baht. Pattaya lots of baht buses for ten baht and chiang mai you just told them where you wanted to go for 30 baht. Bangkok metro and bts covers large part of the city centres then you have so many buses and if adventurous back street boats.phuket has almost no public transport so unless you have your own motorbike or vehicle you will have to be paying daily for taxis which is inconvenient.
Ian *********
theres very little public transport in phuket compared to most major cities in thailand.someone said its becoz of taxi mafia there.unless its changed since i last went there.pattaya they are every minute.
Paddy *********
@Ian ********
there is the baht bus along the beaches and then to old Phuket town but tourists need to learn that route and pickup points

Pretty much all the advice here is bullshit, it’s one of the best and safest places in the world to travel, if flying to bangkok, spend
***
days there and go explore, it’s an amazing city, then head south, I would recommend headed south east to Koh Tao, Koh phangan and Koh Samui, then you can choose to either fly from Samui to the south west islands or take the boat and bus.

Unfortunately this group is filled with miserable negative people with nothing better to do with their time than moan and crack smart arse jokes.

Pack light, you can buy cheap clothes here as you move, bring a travel card with Thai baht on it to avoid bank charges, and aim for the islands rather than mainland, you will have an amazing time and no doubt start coming back regularly 👍🏼 enjoy.
