I have used the search function and cannot find any info on this question: When one is on a 1-year extension of stay based on marriage to a Thai wife, and the wife dies. What happens to the extension? Does the widower have to report to immigration immediately? Does the extension of stay remain valid until the end date stamped in the passport, which would give the widower time to change the reason from “married” to “retirement” or such, OR will it become invalid on the day of the demise of the wife?
TLDR : Answer Summary
If a foreigner holding a 1-year extension based on marriage to a Thai spouse experiences the death of their spouse, the visa remains valid until the expiry date stamped in the passport. Therefore, the widower does not need to leave immediately and has time to change the visa status from married to retirement or another category if desired. However, it is advised to report the situation to immigration.
