What are the essential items from the western world that you cannot get in Thailand?
I know stick deodorant is hard to come by there but is there anything else I should plan to bring lots of?
Thank you in advance 🙏

TLDR : Answer Summary
Expats moving to Thailand are advised to bring certain essential items that may be hard to find or expensive in the country. Common mentions include specific brands of deodorant, vitamins, and tampons, which are often of lower quality or only available at a premium price. Dairy products, including quality cheese and butter, are also cited as being limited or expensive depending on location. Clothing for larger sizes can be difficult to find. While many cosmetics have local alternatives, specific preferences for brands may necessitate bringing these from home. Items such as sunscreen, certain snacks, and specific household products like dusters and toilet cleaners are also noted as being better sourced from the West. Overall, while many products can be found in Thailand, those with specific preferences or dietary restrictions may wish to stock up.
Everything you have at home you can get here. Sun screen is expensive so bring some

You can get any brand of deodorant on Lazada (SE Asia's answer to Amazon). I get Secret, and my son uses Speedstick or Old Spice. Whoever told you it isn't readily available lives under a rock and must not shop online. Check Lazada.co.th for products you're thinking are rare, and check if the price difference is worth it.
I've found that good sunblock is cheaper back in the states, and it's worth bringing any specific type of American (or where ever you're from) snacks or candies that are not so internationally popular. For me, that's RedVines, butterfinger, feastables chocolate, airheads, hidden valley ranch, beef jerky, sweet chopped jalapeno from trader joes, tapatio sauce, cans of refried black beans for Mexican nights.
Most of those can be found on Lazada too... But at 10x the price, so doesn't make it worth it.
Where ever you're from, think of the foods/treats that you enjoy and might want, and start plugging them into Lazada. You might find that some things you think are stable everywhere, are actually just popular in your country and might be harder to find abroad. It's not always what you think.

I live in thailand.
Depending where you live somethings are difficult to get.
Bangkok you can get anything and everything….
The smaller islands I struggled with things like dry shampoo, heat spray for hair, Moroccan oil, high end makeup like Chanel, Mac etc, perfumes…. Underwear shops just don’t exist! You have to purchase in SHEIN or online. Good quality chocolate. If you uk and Europe BYO lol. Struggled to buy nice shoes Bangkok is better but range and style just not the same as UK/Europe. I have my fave face creams from home so always bring stock up. Same with shampoo/conditioner. You cannot get jungle formula bug spray. Not good for you but I have an allergy to mosquitos and nothing else works for me!
If you are on the larger side being tall, have larger boobs lol or wide hips etc you just struggle to get anything to fit you! Clothes shopping not the best.
Ermmm if I think of more I’ll add 🙃
Omg tampons are such bad quality here I always bring those form home
we have access to Lazada down on the islands too, everything's pretty easy to get just like bkk, besides maybe some of the frozen foods from the import shops 😏
body wash and washing up liquid? I see aisles and aisles of it at supermarkets …. I usually buy natural and biodegradable … this washing up liquid is certainly very good

Otherwise it’s a stupid question.
Thailand is very very modern, you name it, you can buy it!
I’ve never bought melatonin here, but have you tried at the pharmacy and asking the pharmacy. A lot of medicines we are used to buying off the shelves, they have behind the counter. A pharmacist has to give it to you.

I stock up on Lindt chocolate (here 100g costs more than 6 euros) and my fav coffee (Turkish). Thailand has lots of coffee to offer but locals prefer dark roast with a bitter taste, and if you like light roast, you need to pay extra all the time.
Overall, you can find almost everything here but the price for some things might be x3. If you have some foods you can't live without, you might want to bring them with you if you have enough space in your suitcase.
thanks for recommendations 😊 I will try this one. I visited a few coffee festivals recently and tried out many local brands. For now, I think “19 degrees” (19 องศาเหนือ) is my favorite local brand with several light roasted types of beans available. It’s relatively inexpensive too 😁 You guys might give them a try, they sell on Shopee too 😊
can I recommend you a brand? I had the same thought on coffee but then discovered this brand- they're in the north I think, but it's the staple in our house now. Good value for the amount you get too 👍🏼 both their light and med roasts are great
prevalence of dark roast is a problem indeed. I’ve tried dozens of brands/varieties and most of them suck or overly expensive or both. Now I just get Boncafe beans of Morning/All Day variety - it tastes good and available at any Makro
yeah I get boncafe when I'm desperate and Lazada is being slow to deliver, it give that brand a chance and you might enjoy it 😁
I actually got a bag from a local coffee shop that has always supplied a blend that I really liked, but haven't gotten used to the other at this point, it's not quite hitting the spot like it did before.... And frankly the one from Lazada is cheaper on top of it 😅
I need to get mine from lazada but it's not the same

Quality vitamin cost a lot here, make up that suits fair skin is hard to find, bras above size 12, non Asian spices if you like to cook and a Google Chrome or Amazon firestick so you can use a VPN on your tv to watch all your favourites from home is helpful. Also good as they stay logged on and dont mean setting up every time you move house

Pretty much everything available here. People say to bring sunscreen and mosquito repellent. Dont fall for that, both available and not more expensive the west.
Big clothing also easily available in the cities. Especially Bangkok.
Heck even vitamins and supplements around same price as Europe, despite people claiming its more expensive. I get visit from Europe and was going to ask them to bring until i actually started comparing prices,
After living here for a year ive found everything is available. And most things available to order on Lazada.
Only i can think of is local country food ingredients. But even allot of that is available (but at premium price) Heck I can even find Norwegian brown cheese.

As a female, tampons. The tampons here are such bad quality and feel toxic. Over stock up on these if you stay long term. Skin care without whitening agents. If you exercise a lot (maybe you have Muaythai soft power DTV) good quality magnesium powder. I live on an island so makes it really hard for these things and covid was hard. Thought I was going to get toxic shock syndrome from the tampons.
can get much better quality where I’m from in Australia

For me it's everyday household items like dryer sheets and one time use dusters. I use disposable swiffer dusters in the US and you can't find them here. Disposable toilet bowl cleaners. My thai friend tells me it's because of eco friendliness. Makes sense. Those are the things I miss the most.
this is the silliest list I’ve ever come across. I’ve lived in Russia, Europe, South America and Thailand, have been married to an American for 10y and still had to google every item and then ask myself why on Earth would I need that lol
Advil is a name brand, like Tylenol. The actual drug is ibuprofen and is easily available at every pharmacy. Like the way bandaid has become a generic term in the USA but isn't what bandages are called in most of the rest of the world. Imagine claiming they don't sell bandaids in Thailand just because no one knew it by that name.
advil is here. But you have to ask for the actual name of it and not the brand. It’s naproxen sodium. I buy it all the time here. At the pharmacy and you have to ask the pharmacist for it. It’s behind the counter.
Pui *****
Anonymous participant 465 naproxen sodium is not Advil. Advil is ibuprofen. Naproxen Sodium is Alleve, if you are from the USA.
Plenty of stick deodorant, but no Old Spice brand! And it's expensive to order from Shopee or Lazada. I always bring a lot when I come back from the US.

Specific branded items. We like blistex lip balm and bring that. Also I agree with you on the stick deodorant. I bring a bunch of sticks from home. I don't like the roll-ons.
I bring certain nutritional supplements, vitamins, etc. You can get them in Thailand but they are more expensive.
That being said you can find a lot of stuff on Lazada or Shoppee.

Specific branded items that you are attached to.
Off the top of my head.
Feminine hygiene, supplements, cosmetics, specific sunscreen brands like the ones that are reef safe and do not contain ingredients that I want to avoid
Specific food products (example, organic, grass fed, gluten free, non seed oil containing etc)
As far as deodorant I prefer brands that do not contain aluminum or other ingredients that are not that great.
Right now I love Salt and Stone so I would have to stock up on that.
Very specific food items from your country. Some Beaty care products, and some might be more expensive. A 5090 GPU lol is way more expensive here as in US - some candies as well. And some suppliments are way overpriced due to import tax and no availability in white label, like NAC, reveresatrol, NAD, NIACIN…
Eirik ***********
Anonymous participant 566 Yea, I just saw a 5090 at around 2300 usd on Amazon dot com. For me personally, I'd have to receive it in Georgia (Sakartvelo), and the price would end up being around 2700 USD. So for me personally, 3000 USD for a 5090 in Thailand wouldn't be too bad. But I have my trusty 4090, so why bother. Waiting for 6090!
while there are vitamins out there that are actually soluble and deliver the advertised nutrients, healthy people generally gain no benefit from taking them. Many large, peer reviewed studies have been done on this over the last few decades. Sure, there are specific instances where they’re needed and effective, but for the majority of the population it has no effect on health.
I’d wager I’m a few years older than you. 😆 I’ve spoken to several medical doctors about this and read several large, long term studies on the effects of vitamin/supplement use. A well balanced diet is much more beneficial and truly all that is needed - unless there are specific reasons, such as pregnancy, medical conditions, etc. And, yes, as I get older I’m sure I’ll probably add in some calcium and vitamin D.
My comment was in reference to the general, healthy population that has the means and access to a full diet with complete nutrition. I realize there are endless exceptions to that group.
well if the intention is to shed some light on the corruption of the supplement industry in general, I'm definitely on your side about that! It is really sad to see the amount of garbage useless supplements and vitamins that the general public are conned into taking, as if it's somehow going to improve their life. I totally agree that proper nutrition is always the better solution. I'm more mean high dose of vitamin C when there's a bug going around, B12 and probiotic helping to keep the immune system strong (a d raw chopped garlic) goes a long way to keeping us out of the clinic and passing by all the little bugs that circulate around ❤️

Even a lot of the western brands for things like haircare/cosmetics etc you can get most of them from Sephora or online these days and if not, there are some excellent Thai brands.
All basic essential toiletries you can get anywhere from the likes of 7-11 etc.
You might be more likely to get more responses in other groups like backpacker/travelling groups that aren’t dedicated to the DTV Visa such as this one too. Hope that helps 🙏🏼
bruh. It's not Phuket 😏 it only becomes infested with tourism for a few months a year, then it's back to it's sleepy local style self. But nice try gatekeeping authenticity 😁

Anonymous participant 689 nice cheese, creams, chocolate. Like old mate pointed out, you can get them at certain supermarkets, but they are only in major hub areas. As most Thai’s are lactose intolerant they can be hard to come by in the villages.
In bigger supermarkets, like BigC and Makro you can find a lot of imported cheese, but it is expensive. Personally I not found ice cream tasting as good as in Europe
I understand. At least in Bangkok and Chiang Mai there’s allot. Bangkok even have a dedicated mall for it, with funny shop names 😅 (Fatty girl etc lol) Even at markets they have 2-5xl. But your probably right a about rural Thailand.
Stick deodorant is the only deodorant you’ll find lol
Jared *********
Anonymous participant 486 spray and roller gel deodorant is the most common in Thailand. Probably close to 99% even. Searched multiple Lotus, Big C, Makro, Go Wholesale, 7-11, dozens of pharmacies and so far have found only two stick deodorants. Villa Market imported goods (expensive) and one brand at one Big C. But all of the locations have many sprays and gel types just not stick types.
I think the brand name logo doesn't change so is easily identifiable. Just use Google Translate to read the fine print. And yes stick or roll-on deodorant and/or antiperspirant is everywhere.
