Hi all , hoping someone from Australia who has recently applied for Non o retirement visa in Australia, does it say on your 90 days non o visa from embassy , , non o or non o retirement? Much appreciate your response 🙏
Answer summary
The discussion focuses on the application and characteristics of the Non-O visa for retirees in Thailand, primarily from the perspective of Australians. Participants clarify that the Non-O visa, often informally referred to as a 'retirement visa', does not explicitly label the purpose on the visa itself. Several users recount their experiences with the application process, emphasizing the importance of meeting financial requirements and the option to extend the visa after entry. The conversation also highlights the different options available for visa categories, including the significance of age and financial standing, and provides insights into practical steps like opening a bank account to facilitate the transition to living in Thailand.

I did it through Sydney Consulate last year. Choose non o other during the process, then choose pensioner over 50 getting a pension. I don't get a pension yet but I had to show aud equivalent of 800k thb in my Australian bank account. It was granted and then in Thailand subsequently extended it with 12 month permit to stay.

Mine did not say on the evisa. The immigration officer asked me and i said retirement. Stamped in "O" , 90 days. I had to go to 2 banks to open the accoount. The first was lazy and just did did not want to open it. The second was most helpful. Kasikorn. I got my Thai licence first, they said the 2nd i.d. with my address same as my letter from immigration made it easier. Good luck. No stress.

with regards and thanks to Robert Lagas, who wrote this!

Once more, because people try to give advice based on what they think is a "Retirement Visa"

First of all, you DO not have to be retired to apply for this visa. You however need to be 50 years or older

Second is that all options have DIFFERENT rules, regulations and requirements.

So please read and try not to give incorrect advice by using the requirements for a different type of visa or extension of stay.

What is a retirement visa?

It is a phrase used by foreigners and Immigration and it could be 6 different types of visa or stay permits, with different rules, regulations and requirements

OR

it could even be an 1 year Extension of Stay based on being over 50 years of age and willing to sit out the rest of their life inside Thailand.

It is easy to type “retirement visa”, but very difficult to understand which option the person refers to

Options are:

1. Single Entry Non Immigrant O visa based on being over 50 years of age

2. Multiple Entry Non Immigrant O visa based on being over 50 years of age (it got discontinued by October 2023 and is not available any more)

3. Non Immigrant O visa based on being over 50 years of age without entry by conversion at local immigration office

4. Non Immigrant O-A visa (Long Stay)

5. Non Immigrant O-X visa

6. Long Term Residency (LTR) visa

7. Extension of Stay based on being over 50 years of age and willing to sit out the rest of their life inside Thailand (stamp from Immigration, which is not a visa)

ONLY for options 3, 5 and 7 the applicant needs a bank account in Thailand or a Certificate of Income from their Embassy.

Option 2 cannot be applied for any more, since all Thai Embassies and Consulates took it out of the E-visa program.

Option 3 is applied for by conversion of your Visa Exempt Entry or Tourist Visa at your local Immigration Office inside Thailand.

Option 6 is applied for with support of BOI Thailand

Option 7 is applied for at your local Immigration Office AFTER you used a Non-Immigrant visa.

Other options are applied for at a Thai Consulate OR for those countries who are legit, on-line.

Thanks for reading this long explanation.

Perhaps you should clarify your question. The way it reads to me is that your hoping to apply for the initial 90 day Non-O based on being over 50 but want to get the 12 months extension of stay based on a different reason? And if the Non-O stipulates the reason it was issued then you won't be able to do that, but why would you want to?

I have applied and received a non o visa based on retirement but the actual visa issued only states “ non o “

EmeraldWallaby4034 The reason for the Non-O is usually in the "Remarks" but often this is written in Thai so you'd need someone who reads Thai to confirm it says retire or whatever

EmeraldWallaby4034 I see you've updated your post. Looks like what you're worried about is it not stating "retirement" when you think that is what you applied for. You actually applied for and received a Non-O visa based on being over 50. The fact it doesn't mention a category is nothing to worry about, you can use it to open a bank account with a residence certificate from immigration and a Thai SIM card registered against your passport. Deposit a minimum of 800k baht as soon as you can as it needs to be there 2 months before you can apply for an extension of stay, which will explicitly say retirement as the purpose.

There's actually no such thing as a "retirement" visa - it's a term used by immigration and expats to describe the non-O (over 50 years of age) visa - there is no requirement to be retired. Many FIFO workers use this visa as it's very user-friendly. The initial visa is issued by an embassy through the e-Visa portal. This gives you 90 days upon entry. During that 90 days you arrange a bank account, deposit the 800k, allow it to "season" for two months, and then apply for the 12-month extension of stay, which you then do year after year

I did that, an Australian living in Japan. 4 business days to get it approved from Osaka Thai consulate. Non O visa gives you 90 days to sort out other things, like bank account and get the 1 year extension of stay.

Stephen Howell news to me sorry I always thought a Non o A . was retirement 12 month visa.

I was told to do my Non O in Australia gives 3 months then get 12 month extension = 15 months

Stephen Howell the Non-O/A Visais not the "retirement visa". The Non-O/A visa is classified as the "Long-Stay Visa"
Stephen ********

Kenneth Owens Both OA and O are "retirement" visas, as is "OX". They simply have different benefits and disadvantages depending on individual circumstances and plans. The Non-O "retirement" visa gives 90 days on entry, during which time you arrange your finances within Thailand to meet the criteria for the 12-month extension of stay (often incorrectly referred to as a visa)
