Arrived in BKK today, all went smoothly. No option to go through automated E Gate or anything like that.
Needed to show 4 things:
1.TDAC
2. E VISA
3. Passport
4. Boarding card
No questions about DTV just stamped and walked through. Happy days!

I've entered 6 times since my DTV was issued - 4 x BKK, 1 x DMK and 1 x Nong Khai, and I've never supplied more than my passport and visa

Never use the e-gate If you have a Visa! Only for entry stamp, otherwise you loose your Visastatus.

Can anyone please show me even one place where it is said that a DTV visa run must be done by airplane? What prevents me from walking across the border (which I have done, by the way, already 7-8 times while on DTV)? Or is it just that when asked for an onward flight, most people do not realize that in addition to showing the ticket, there is an option to give a valid explanation as to why you do not have or need one?

You need proof of onward travel, not necessary by airplane.A simple train or bus ticket also might do as long as IO will see it as a realistic way for you to leave the country.
When you can proof your booked accomodation is at walking distance of the border, your explanation might be accepted by IO.

But luckily if you don't have onward travel and got checked, normally you can book something when IO asks for it.

Only people who have been at least one time in Thailand and are on visa exemption are able to use the E-gates. You needed to show your boarding card when you entered Thailand? That’s for boarding a plane not going through immigration
