What challenges did expats face when attempting to extend their visas at the Phuket immigration office recently?

FYI just wanted to share my experience at the Phuket immigration office this morning. Tried to do as they advised and went early to get a 30 day extension past Sept 26th. I had all of the required documents but the officials there told me that they couldn’t process visa extensions yet because the new process had not been published yet in the Royal Gazette. Anyone else go there today and have better luck?

TLDR : Answer Summary
An expat shared their experience at the Phuket immigration office where they were unable to process a 30-day extension for their visa, as the new procedures had not yet been published in the Royal Gazette. Several comments from other users provided advice and insights regarding the flexibility of immigration offices, highlighting the potential for future changes and suggesting that the expat return to the office or contact a different one for a better outcome.

Maybe something is in the works to your benefit. In my experience, Phuket is definitely one of the friendlier and more flexible imm offices.

If they turned you away now to wait for a different outcome after Royal Gazette it probably means they know something better that you would maybe qualify for is coming.

I seem to remember that were making people panic by refusing to process extensions just before 2nd amnesty was announced. They could only refuse and say "come back later" as legally they can't announce what is in the works until it's published.

Not saying that there will be another amnesty, i think only an outsider chance of that happening....perhaps just a longer term stay option for tourists to pay for (would be nice) but it is just my personal bias that Phuket is one of the more foreigner friendly and less spiteful offices to work with.

Either way, you seem to have your house in order for the usual embassy extension after the so called announcement that Phuket already advised Multi Non-B people to wait for on 15th, so I would say relax and wait.

Every office and often officer may do it differently go back tomorrow or to another office

Keep in mind an embassy letter is a request to extend a visa. Thai immigration has no obligation to accept the letter and can set their own rules

Why didn't you file an appeal against their decision?

The order of trust is [generally] for extension of stays and staying in Thailand is:

1. Your local immigration office

2. Bangkok immigration office

3. Facebook groups

4. Your local embassy

5. Thai consulates in other countries

If something the local immigration office is requesting doesn't sound right, investigate to find the truth

I am sure embassies know about Thai law. After all it is part of their job to know the rules and regulations 🤦🏻‍♂️

No, they don't. The embassy's job is to represent the other government's interest in the foreign country. Never, ever trust what your embassy has to say about immigration laws. Also, never trust what the Thai immigration office says about getting visas outside of Thailand, and never trust a Thai consulate with their information on extension of stays.

I didn’t know that this was an option. My friends have contacted their embassies regarding our visit as well and they suggested giving it a couple more days so that the process can be figured out. If that doesn’t work then the appeal option might be worth looking into.

Your embassy would have no idea about the Thai law. I would take whatever your embassy says with a big grain of salt.
