A Tale of Two Courses

I am sharing the following experience for everyone’s knowledge. Interpret the results as you will, and I would love to hear everyone’s opinions. I am presenting the facts as they happened, none of this is heresy and can be verified if anyone has any doubts.

For context, I own a Muay Thai gym that many people in this group have used (Tiger Eye) and have been involved in a lot of DTV applications, covering around 70 nationalities and applications through roughly 50 different embassies and consulates. Even with that experience, I don't consider myself the arbiter of truth. My position has always been that there are simply too many variables that we don't fully understand, and each embassy seems to weigh factors differently.

About a week ago, two different people received two very different outcomes that went completely against the conventional wisdom and advice. I understand that most people are trying to help, and I genuinely think there is a lot of useful information shared here. But I also think we need to be careful not to mistake common advice for universal truth.

The first case was a British citizen applying in London. They applied with a one-month course. They met the financial requirements, but there wasn't anything particularly noteworthy about the application, and as far as I'm aware they had no ongoing income.

They were approved.

The second case was a Western European citizen applying in Jakarta. This applicant had a one-year course, well over the minimum financial requirement, more than one million baht in liquid savings, additional liquid funds in another account, investments, a detailed financial explanation, and a professionally written cover letter. They had also recently started a business and included a well-structured prospectus explaining its future income potential, although in my opinion that wasn't even necessary because their savings alone comfortably exceeded the requirements.

Honestly, it was one of the most meticulously prepared applications I've seen.

They were given a METV. They weren’t even rejected. They were given a METV which is valid for 6 months and obviously doesn’t cover a commitment to train for one year. People are told that you must have 9 months or 12 months or you risk getting an METV. This case directly contradicts that notion. Obviously, in previous cases where applicants got a METV perhaps course length was a factor, but this case makes you wonder if that is actually the case?

Now, could there have been factors that I wasn't aware of? Absolutely. None of us ever has the complete picture.

But these aren't isolated examples from my experience.

The reason I'm sharing this is because I often see people immediately assume that if someone is rejected with a course shorter than nine or twelve months, then the course length must have been the reason. Likewise, if someone is approved with a one-year course, it's often presented as proof that a one-year course is the "safe" option. And if someone is approved with a course length less than 6 months (or even less than 9 months) they are told they got lucky.

These two cases tell a different story.

Of course, all else being equal, a longer course probably makes for a stronger application. I don't think anyone would argue otherwise. But I also don't think the evidence suggests that course length is the overwhelmingly dominant factor that it's sometimes made out to be.

My advice has always been to focus on the specific embassy you're applying through, because embassies clearly have different approaches and different expectations.

Ultimately, I think the biggest takeaway is that we should all be a little more cautious about speaking in absolutes. This Facebook group contains a huge amount of valuable information, but it's still only a sample of applicants. It may have its own biases, blind spots, and patterns that don't necessarily reflect the totality of DTV applications worldwide.

In the end DO YOUR DUE DILLIGENCE. Make a genuine intention to actually do the activity you are signing up for. Look at the embassy specific requirements because each embassy is NOT the same. Some of them have vastly different expectations and requirements.

Good luck everyone.
Answer summary
The post discusses contrasting outcomes of two visa applications for the Thai DTV visa, emphasizing that course length isn't the sole determinant for approval. It highlights that each embassy has unique criteria and that applicants must navigate varying expectations. The author urges caution against viewing common advice as universal truths and reinforces the importance of individual preparation and understanding embassy-specific requirements.

Keep your visa application simple. Only upload the requested documents. Overcomplicating the process usually just leads to problems.

I always wonder if you actually have enough room in your gym to handle all the students that have signed up using your gym if they all show up to actually train.

People are getting confused. The Soft Power Program course is designed to strengthen a DTV visa application and reduce the number of additional document requests. However, the Soft Power course has almost never been the main factor in the Thai Embassy's decision.

Applicants are still required to provide around 50% of the same documents as those applying under the Workation category. The main difference is that if someone doesn't have enough supporting documents or government-issued documents for a Workation DTV application, they may be able to replace some of those additional requirements with the government-issued documents provided through the Soft Power course.

Also, whether the course is 6 months or 9 months has never been a factor that provides a higher chance of approval. Financial stability and strong supporting documents remain much more important for any Thai Embassy when considering a DTV application.

I will add to this post by saying in my experience I believe Jakarta are on some weird power trip with DTV applications. I applied in Jakarta in March through the Muay Thai soft power. I met every requirement and was a clear candidate for the visa. They asked me on 3 different occasions for very similar things. 3 weeks later I get approved with an ED with specific dates which I couldn't use due to the dates they selected. Emailed and said I think they made a mistake with my visa as I had applied for the DTV. I had taken screenshots of the application status in the portal showing the name of the visa applied for etc. In real time they changed the application visa on the portal to say I applied for the ED visa instead! I emailed again and basically was told it depends on the person who looks at the application what visa they believe would suit you. It's like you apply for a sports medicine degree and then being selected for an economics degree instead because they believe that's what you should do....I was blown away by their response really!! Then I fly to Mexico apply from here (with Australian passport) they ask me for the same bank statement I uploaded first time but just to supply the currency exchange with it!! That's it......approved 3 days later! Exactly the same documents were uploaded with that application.

I think there is no clear system to this process and they are making it up as they go really. Don't get me wrong I am grateful I was approved in Mexico and am not whinging. I guess they learn when people will stop trying and go to another country. I say try once, try twice if rejected again move on as it you could be spending your money somewhere else.

Problem is when people like in your case try to proof any income with business stuff and extended explanations. While softpower does not require that AT ALL. it shows a picture to the embassy worker that you most likely intend to work and

not just do your softpower activity. they want to grow a business and not do muay thai. it’s confusing for them and leads to METV or even denial. people need to stop mixing up softpower and workcation. two completely different DTV categories. there is no income requirements for the DTV.

The thing people tend to omit is that a visa is a privilege and not a right.

You can exceed all the requirements but still the embassy has the absolute right to tell you.

- It's not a matter of passport.

In 2025, The USA rejected 53.10% of visa applications from Canadians and only 24.75% of visa applications from Mozambians and only 25.67% of applications from Thai nationals.

Source - the US government itself:

- It's not just having money or a job. You can have it but still questionable ties to your country or simply, the story narrated by your documents doesn't make sense.

It can all be of all this and much more.

At the end of the day, you are obligated to meet the requirements. They aren't obligated to grant you a visa.

May I ask, how do you know about an applicant that applied with a one month course? Did he apply via your gym? I think it is important to highlight while I agree with you on the concept of universal truths vs common advice, it is unclear how you would know about these specific applicants unless they are your students. One month seems extremely short and not sure I beleive this story

I came to your gym in person the other week to discuss my situation.

I applied with a 6 month course in Vientiane, a recommended location, it was supposed to be a slam dunk.

Well over the financial requirements for several months.

Cover letter, businesses invoices, everything to show my business and line of work same as you described above.

I was called in, had to face a very bitter looking female IO.

Was subsequently given a MET visa even though I applied for DTV.

At one of the more easier embassy’s to apply for. From what I’m told.

All the people in here claiming absolutes are usually old very bitter expats who had the easy way in to begin with. It’s sad to see so many people enjoying and praying on other people’s misfortune.

I’m going to be honest with my opinion from living in Thailand sometime.

There are no rules. Thai people in general are a EXTREMELY emotional culture.

They will judge you based on anything, looks, clothes, nationality, your smile. It’s just a silly little culture here in the land of smiles.

It’s a roll of the dice of who you get, what their mood is, and what your outcome is.

One thing I have learned here in Thailand is that they do not care. They know they are emotional. Their house their rules. They just don’t care. They also know there is zero logic behind any of their decision making. They just didn’t like the color of your favorite shirt that day. Welcome to Thailand.
