I have been in Thailand for one year. 6 months has been with a DTV visa. Does anyone know the rules for taxes? I have an online income and pay taxes to the UK. Do I need to file a tax return in Thailand?
Answer summary
An expat holding a DTV visa in Thailand for over 180 days is considered a tax resident and is obligated to file a tax return in Thailand if they have accessible income. The tax obligations depend on the amount of income brought into Thailand and the tax agreement between Thailand and the UK, which helps avoid double taxation. Comments from the community highlight that if most income is earned outside Thailand and not brought into the country, it may not be subject to Thai taxes. Some expats share experiences indicating that, despite being tax residents, many do not actively file taxes.

You have a company ( in UK) , the company pay tax in UK.

You take money from that company ? ( salary/dividend ? ), if you bring that income money in thailand ( as thai tax resident ) you have to pay tax in thailand for that income. ( you may deduct some tax in thailand from UK ( not the tax paid by the company .. )

If you don't have company in UK, you should not pay in UK, but you will probably need work permit in thailand ( much easier to have a company ).

Let’s be real here, does the majority of DTV holders pay any taxes at all here or not? Didn’t meet a single person that filed taxes yet

If you spend 180 days or more in any calendar year inside Thailand then you are automatically a Thai tax resident in that year. Whether or not you then need to file a Thai tax return all depends on the assessable income you bring into Thailand, earned income is automatically assessable income. If you bring into Thailand 120k baht of assessable income in a tax year you are then required to file a Thai tax return, bringing in includes withdrawals from ATMs, spending on cards, bank transfers etc. Unfortunately for you the deadline for filing tax for last year has passed so you would probably have to pay some sort of penalty. Due to the DTA between Thailand and the UK you can claim a credit against Thai tax for any tax already paid on the income you bring into Thailand so you won't be taxed twice on the income, you claim the credit as part of your Thai tax filing

You are a tax resident when you have stayed more than 180 days in a calendar year.

You are supposed to file taxes.

If and how much you will have to pay will depend on the tax agreement between Thailand and UK.

I pay my taxes in Thailand, and end up savings quite a bit because of it.

Absolutely worth looking into.

Doesn’t matter what visa you are on rules are tax resident over 180 days in a year in Thailand.

You probably won’t owe any tax if you are paying in the UK…. Only money remitted into Thailand.

Honestly I know a lot of people would disagree with me I don’t think it’s worth even filling g the paper work out
