TLDR : Answer Summary
Travelers can bring any amount of money into Thailand but must declare amounts equal to or above US$20,000 or equivalent currencies. The general advice leans towards applying for the Non-O retirement visa abroad before arriving in Thailand to facilitate procedures like opening a bank account.
NON-O RETIREMENT VISA RESOURCES / SERVICES
  • Go to the Retirement Visa Section for information on requirements, including age restrictions, financial requirements, and necessary documentation.
  • For immediate assistance, contact Thai Visa Centre directly via LINE at @ThaiVisaCentre or Email them.
  • Explore recent discussions by using the Non-O Retirement Visa tag in the search box at the top of the page.
  • Join the Thai Visa Advice Facebook Group to ask your questions, and get advice from others.

the rules regarding the export of currency out of your home country might differ, so beware!

£10,000 at customs UK and they'll probably ask you where you got it from if you're stopped. Make sure you can prove where you got it with bank records or other paperwork.

at least in the US if you have over the amount and don't declare it they will confiscate it and start looking for ways to take it all.

same in UK.

The max is how much your country will allow before declaring. Aust is $10,000

I don't think that there's a maximum.

You can bring as much cash as you want. You simply have to declare everything at, or over US$20k, or the equivalent.

US$ 20,000 (or equivalent) before you’d need to declare it.

Usually better to get the Non O abroad because it makes getting a bank account much easier.
