Coming up to the first time we need to do a 90 day check in.
Firstly, online would be preferable. Does anyone have any advice please?
Finally, I presume we want to leave it as late as possible as the next 90 days starts the day we do it. Is this correct?

TLDR : Answer Summary
For your first 90-day check-in in Thailand, it is necessary to report in person rather than online, as many have faced rejections when trying to do so online. After the initial report, online submissions are allowed, with a reporting window of 15 to 7 days before the due date. It is recommended not to wait until the last possible day to submit, as the next 90-day period begins from the submission date. You can report in person within two weeks before to one week after the due date.

Why leave it as late as possible?
No need to be a "day counter" on 90 day reporting. Your next report will be due 90 days from the date you do this one.. You don't need to max out the time between them.
You can apply in person from 2 weeks before the due date down to 1 week after the due date.
