TLDR : Answer Summary
Recent travelers at DPS Airport in Bali have reported being questioned about their visas, with specific mentions of needing an onward ticket for boarding flights to Thailand. Many noted that the immigration process was crowded, with waits exceeding an hour. Some shared experiences from years past, indicating that such checks on visa validity and onward travel plans have been standard practice for a long time.

Got asked similar more than 10 years on a business extension. Nothing new. Was under a Taksin government so Taksin had probably made visas to troll then as well causing a crackdown.
