What are the best tourist spots and retirement locations in Thailand for expats looking for family-friendly activities and a quiet lifestyle?

ORIGINAL POSTER
My wife, daughter, and I are planning a trip to Thailand from mid-December 2026 through early January 2027. My family will focus on sightseeing—classic tourist spots, temples, beaches, markets, etc.—while I’ll stay on until the end of January to scout retirement locations.

This will be one of a couple of visits I’ll make over the next few years—I’m aiming to retire there in 2028 or 2029. We’d appreciate recommendations for:

Tourism highlights (family-friendly, must-see attractions during peak season)

Retirement spots that match these priorities:

• Affordable cost of living

• 2–3 bedroom house or villa near a beach, with a pool

• Walking or short-drive access to a marina for a 30–40 ft boat

Great diving and snorkelling

• Balanced community: roughly half locals, half expats

• Reliable daily fresh seafood

• Live-in maid service available

• Reasonable proximity to good hospitals (or a quick flight to one)

• Quiet and low-key even during high season—no heavy tourist crowds

Thanks in advance—any suggestions or itinerary ideas would be brilliant.

TLDR : Answer Summary
The post seeks suggestions for tourist attractions in Thailand suitable for families during the peak season as well as recommendations for retirement locations that offer an affordable cost of living, proximity to beaches and marinas, good diving options, and a balanced community of locals and expats. Comments suggest Hua Hin as a viable option due to its infrastructure and amenities, though some warn it may be too touristy. Other locations mentioned include Maha Sarakham, Sri Racha, and Krabi, each with varying opinions on their suitability for retirees.

To retire is not to be in vacation... I cant be of any help because my expectations were different : no expats, no tourists, real Thaïland... very easy to find even in the middle of nowhere, 15mn from an airport, 10mn from an hospital, 10mn from a station or hypermarket with everything...a real paradise....

Everywhere with the facilities and attractions you request will not be low key and will have heavy traffic.

Marinas Phuket, Krabi Pattaya etc etc. Hua hins crap for snorkelling.

Sri Racha maybe suitable place to look. Also Prachap Khiri Kan and Maybe Khanom

Maha Sarakham only place to live, trouble is you are a few years off retirement and the way the world is could be many changes. I would keep coming explore different areas and decide for your shift where you and family really like .Yea Hua Hin is nice but full of expats. Most areas of Thailand I have are all ok with the exception being Pattaya steer clear.

Graeme Drake What a shithole Maha Sarakham is. Been there. Stayed there 1 night.

My Thai wife had a friend there, that is why we went there.

An armpit of Thai, most of Thais would not even know such a place even existed.

3 or 4 visits/vacations over the next couple of years and you will have more than enough insight into Thailand. Don't rely too heavily or place too much importance on other peoples recommendations, Thailand is many different things to many different people. Find your own path and don't place too much emphasis on the well trodden path. Stick to the basics and then deviate, improvise and adapt, that's the beauty and charm of Thailand. Good luck.

Pat Trick I did 13 trips before I made the move so I knew exactly what I was in for, where I wanted to be, and what I wanted to do.

yea I did a fair few trips myself problem.was didn't ask enough questions myself, as I now know Thais don't ask questions. The most confusing for me was the visa situation had a Non O thru marriage multiple entry's, thought great can have a final look around for a few months and decide do I really want to live in villiage. First leaving curve only here for 90 days said the stamp.

You should check out Hua Hin

It certainly seems to fit your criteria and is very popular with retired Expats and foreigners staying long term..

Quite a variety of different locations in and around Hua Hin to suit just about anyone and a good selection of accommodation options..

Good infrastructure and amenities and good hospitals and medical and dental services available.

There are a couple of Hua Hin Expat groups on Facebook that are a good source of more information..

There is a nice Marina south of Hua Hin as well that is well sheltered up a river that leads out to the ocean.

I have a friend who uses this Marina and been there several times.

Here is the website for the Marina..

BazaarAsia57 Just be aware Hua Hin is really quiet. Visited a couple times and it's okay for a weekend but to set up a home would be incredibly boring. I sure didn't retire to Thailand to watch grass grow!

No great diving & scuba at Hua Hin.

Hua Hin lots of tourists

Gulf is too shallow at Hua Hin for serious sailboating.
