This question is for Americans with a Schwab account. I have downloaded Wise and connected it to my account. Now I did a direct transfer last year when I paid for my Elite Visa and there were no issues at all. My question is what benefits, if any, are there to using Wise instead of just doing a direct transfer from Schwab? Shoule I use Wise when I move in July or skip the middle man? Thanks for your answers!

TLDR : Answer Summary
The user is weighing the benefits of using Wise for transferring funds to Thailand against directly transferring money from their Schwab account. Responses highlight that Schwab's international wire transfer fees (around $25) and potential delays could make Wise a better option for funds under 100,000 baht due to its transparent fee structure and faster processing. Additionally, using Schwab for ATM withdrawals is advantageous as they refund ATM fees. Users suggest considering opening a Thai bank account and utilizing Wise for favorable exchange rates and lower costs.

Schwab is great as they have 24-7 customer service if there is any problems plus you can set up a monthly transfer that will happen on any given day you choose ( excluding weekends ). When opening a Thai bank account they are all different on there exchange rates, I have found that Bangkok bank is the best and Kasikorn is the worse though I have not dealt with all the banks, I have dealt with most and one time or the other

With having an elite visa, why would you nit open a thai bank account?

I plan to open a Thai bank account. I'm talking about getting money into it.

I use wise, good rates and small charges.

Wise lets you convert USD to THB in same wise account, so you can do it when rates are favorable, then hold or send the THB to your Thai account. You can convert back to USD when rates go the other way…giving you the option to benefit from good FX rates.

You’ll get the best rate using WISE for monthly transfers

Skip the middle man do all withdrawals from atm and charles Schwab refunds the 220 baht charged by atms

I use my Schwab exclusively for atm cash withdraws as they refund all the fees. Not exactly your question but the amount of money on atm use fees isn’t trivial. 👍

I think Schwab charges $25 for wire transfers. I use my account for ATMs and paying bills online. I use my Holiday Inn for all credit charges overseas.

Used Schwab for 20 years. Max I get charged was $15.00 and that was for a $20,000.00 transfer

just looked and it's 25 bucks, but only 15 bucks for online transfers. I can eat either once a month. Maybe twice once in a long while.

Very rarely is the charge for the transfer what is expensive. It's the conversion rate that is expensive.

I don't need a Wise, never make transfers

that would be 1% of what I plan to transfer a month. I could live with that.

It's going to be dependent upon what Schwab charges for an international wire and what your receiving bank does with that money.

Generally Schwab is good for using ATMs overseas as they will refund the ATM fee. That's how I use my Schwab card when I'm traveling. Thailand ATMs charge 220b fee so if you withdraw the maximum you are basically getting a free transfer to Thailand because Schwab will reimburse the fee and the exchange rate (as long as you do not let the ATM do the exchange) will be good.

To figure out the cost of a wire transfer you need to know the fees from Schwab, the fees from your receiving bank, and what conversion rate they are using.

With Wise you will know the fees and conversion rate in the app before you ever click submit, so everything is upfront and known. It's also (usually) instant or very fast, but large transfer, weekends and holidays can cause delays.

Generally Wise is going to benefit you for anything under about 100,000 baht, but anything more than that you might get a better result from doing a wire transfer if the two institutions involved are low fee with a good exchange rate.

thanks. I'm considering doing one big transfer a month to keep to my budget, so direct may be better.

I take out 20-25k each time from Schwab(sometimes multiple times/mo) then deposit the cash(atm with cdm) into my Bangkok Bank account all via ATM machine. The fees will be refunded at the end of the month.

Capital one/Discover is paying 4-6% on their savings account so I keep my money there. I’m not sure what the rates are now.

Schwab charges $15/ wire transfer no matter what the amount so if I want to transfer large amount ie condo purchase/visa renewal I’ll go this route.

They have great

I would put the transfer into Wise and take a screenshot with all the fees and the amount you should receive. Then exit the app and do the transfer visa Schwabb. Then once it goes through compare the final amount you received with what Wise showed
