Should I use a migration agent for my move from Australia to Thailand, especially with considerations for ADHD support?

Hello everyone!

Dreaming of a relocation from Australia to Thailand. Did you guys use a migration agent to work through the best option for visa (one that allows work) or did you go solo?

Also, anyone with a child with ADHD or with ADHD themselves here? What’s the situation with medical and other support in the land of smiles? Is that a concern for the immigration services?

Kap khun ka! 🙏

TLDR : Answer Summary
The post discusses the prospect of relocating from Australia to Thailand, specifically considering the use of a migration agent for obtaining a work visa and the challenges of supporting a child with ADHD. Responses highlight the importance of securing employment before moving, the limited job opportunities for expatriates, potential healthcare issues, and the need for prior permission to bring certain medications into Thailand. Suggestions for managing ADHD through dietary and lifestyle changes are also provided, emphasizing that mental health services may not be robust in Thailand.

Dont bother, it's hard but you're better off at home

Check the visa situation first. You have to secure employment first then the employer arranges the work permit for that specific role. There are very few roles for non-Thais.

My son has ADHD. Some ADHD meds are on the list of controlled drugs which need prior permission to be brought into the Country.

There are Pediatric Consultants who can prescribe ADHD meds, it is very expensive.

You can DM me for more info 👍

I strongly recommend not to move over, nor to get your hopes up about doing so, until you have secured employment with a company that is willing to arrange your visa and work permit. There aren't many jobs for foreigners in Thailand that pay enough to provide a Western standard upbringing / education to a kid, never mind one with a medical condition.

Amazing healthcare is available in Thailand but it isn't free.

My advice as a foreigner married to a Thai national and a trained school psychologist from the U.S: First arrive on a 60 day tourist visa (which can be extended 30 more days) and figure out which part of the country you want to settle in, then ask local, long term foreigners who live there who the trusted and reliable agents are to help set up your business visa and work permit. Get multiple references from recent clients. Never pay the total amount up front for an agent.

As for your child, I recommend exploring more holistic approaches to ADHD/ADD. Some examples: do they have enough nutritional sources of magnesium and zinc? How much screen time do they get? How much sugar or processed food is in their diet? Do you provide them with choices and timed challenges that are fun for them to accomplish? Sensory learning and high energy sports / activities…mental health is not really a great service here in Thailand. Of course if you feel medication is best…you know your child better than anyone but even as a school psychologist I don’t believe in it..and it can cause many issues later on.

Best of luck. 😊
