What Are the Risks of Traveling to Thailand Without a Return Ticket on a Marriage Visa?

I’m not sure which way to go about with my up coming trip to Thailand to visit my wife.

I’m a Canadian passport holder. I’m married to a Thai national.

My previous trips have consist of me there for only 30 days or less. I did one extension 2 years ago. That’s over the past 5 years or so.

My trip is pretty much open for about three months. I’m not really required to come back home. I just need to get away from this cold winter.

I don’t really know my return date so I was thinking about buying a one way flight.

My plan was getting a single entry visa based on marriage here in Canada before I leave. I don’t plan on leaving Thailand while I’m there.

Am I going to run into any problems either trying to leave Canada without a return ticket or at the Thai immigration counter when I arrive there?

Thanks.

TLDR : Answer Summary
The user is a Canadian passport holder married to a Thai national and is planning a long trip to Thailand. They seek advice on the implications of flying with a one-way ticket and arriving without a return flight. Comments suggest that while a 90-day Non-O visa based on marriage is recommended, airlines may require proof of onward travel to board the flight, potentially causing issues during travel.

Majority of airlines won’t let you board your flight unless you have proof of onward travel. Doesn’t have to be a return flight, it can be a flight or bus ticket to a neighboring country. Every time I’ve booked a one way flight, they’ve asked me for proof. I’ve used multiple airlines too.

's comment on the need for proof of onward travel is the most accurate one you've gotten so far.

I concur with her post, as a rule IF you have a valid VISA in your passport your air carrier isn't going to ask for proof of onward travel at all.

AND I also agree that for you to know what's what you need to be asking your air carrier :)

, not really correct. Many air carriers would check and ask you to have onward travel ticket when you do NOT have valid visa - when you want to enter Thailand on visa exempt scheme.

If you have valid visa, very unlikely they would check. Very few airlines still check onward travel when you have valid visa, it's not bad idea to check with your air carrier in advance anyway.

that was my number one concern, trying to board the plane with a one way ticket. I may just book a cheap flight out of Thailand just so I have something to show them.

Ask your airline before flying. If you get a 90 day Non O based on marriage, you are unlikely to have problems in Thailand, but they can ask for an onward ticket if they want to.

Well ...the easy way would be a 6 month tourist visa ....from you home ....or if you are legally ,Maried in thailand.... You could ask for a non o marriage visa...but you need to show all papers ....ask the nearest consulate first

I am legally married to a Thai. We were married in Thailand. I have all the necessary paperwork. I’m mostly concerned about the one way flight.
