Has it become more of a risk than when I did it in 2013? Bus from HCMC to Phnom Penh and Phnom Penh to Siem Reap. Then taxi to Poipet, walk across the border, tuk tuk to the station and train from Aryanthrapet. It's an amazing experience to see the changing countryside and stop at small market towns for meals. People should stop assuming we all want to fly.
