Has anyone done the border/visa run to Hadlek from Trat province before? Just wondering if it was fairly straightforward? I’m in Koh Chang right now and thinking of driving down to the border. 🤔

There are songtaews from Trat to the border every 30 minutes or so. If you are going to drive yourself there are several resorts along that route and also other points of interest. It is a nice part of the world to spend a couple of days exploring. Koh Kong is quite nice for a night or two. And cheap.

I'm thinking of going to this border on a border run as I'll be visiting a friend in chanthiburi around the time my 30 day extension ends. I'm hoping it's not as big a Shi+ fight as it sounds to do a border run at the poipet border but will have the 3 requirements just in case.

Yes, I drove a rented 150cc scooter from KC to the Had Lek border.

From the Mainland ferry port it took me almost 3 hours to the border, but just under 2 hours on the way back.

I parked near the 7-11 close to exit point.

It only took about 45mins in total to exit and return.

At the Thai exit there are guys that offer assistance and genuinely help to speed things along. No set fee, but they rely on tips. I tipped about 200bt at the end.

Once your passport is stamped out at the Thailand exit, walk about 2 minutes to the Cambodia entry desk, the guy who was assisting me, was waiting for me there, he filled out the arrival form, gave it back to me to take to the window and pay the visa fee. I told the officer at the window I was turning around immediately and he directed me to a nearby office where immigration officers asked me a few questions about why I wasn’t staying in Cambodia. I just said ‘I wish I could, but I have friends visiting in Thailand this week’. They then told me I’d have to pay 300bt for an immediate turnaround (I hear this ‘fee’ varies between 300-800bt).

Once the ‘fee’ was paid, I waited near the window for a few minutes until I was called to pick up my passport.

At this point the guy who had helped me, checked the stamps in my passport and then pointed me to the exit. At this point I tipped him.

At the Cambodia exit point the immigration officers were jovial. At the Thai entry point, no questions asked. I was re-entering on a multi entry tourist visa.

Just to note, don’t be too alarmed when the guys who help take your passport to the office for you. Just keep a watchful eye for peace of mind.

thanks Sam, that’s really helpful. Was this recently? Did you have many previous Thai stamps? I’m just worried about being refused re-entry to Thailand as I’ve heard they’re getting strict now on border runs.

it was about 6 months ago. Lots of previous stamps but I was entering with a multi entry tourist visa, so I’m sure this helps.

I’ve read that visa exempt by land is limited to twice a year. But if you have a valid visa, there’s no set limit to land entries.

Good luck. 🙏

I would like to go to Trat from the Cambodia side. I would take my motorbike from Siem Reap but I need a licence in Thailand (125cc) and the Bike is in my wife's name even though I paid for it. The rule in Cambodia is that foreigners can only buy new. Cannot by used motorbikes.

So, if I do it, I have to take a bus.

It was before Covid. I had a couple of visa exemption stamps.

I did it about 4 times in a row.

They did never complain.

ah ok! Thank you very much! 😉

I always thought they looked at the actual 12 months. As far as you know, if I do the border run in December, and I extend the additional 30 days to January, it is still counted in the old year, despite having extended it in the new one, right?

Extention is different. Only the day entering the country counts.

2 times a calendar year

Should be a 90 minute drive from the ferry at Laem Ngob to the border.

Yes it's very easy. I've never done a visa run, I always go there for a proper entry into Cambodia.
