Answer summary
The conversation discusses whether obtaining a retirement visa is easier for someone married to a Thai citizen who is a permanent resident in Australia. Multiple comments suggest that while both visas (retirement and marriage-based) are available, the retirement visa is generally perceived as having a smoother application process despite stricter financial requirements. Some participants highlight that the retirement visa can be obtained on the same day of application, whereas the marriage extension requires more paperwork and an additional waiting period. There are also mentions of the advantages of each visa type, including the ability to work with a marriage visa.

The biggest advantage is you have a live interpreter! My GF makes life here so much better, especially at the immigration office. I recommend getting the Non-O retirement visa in Thailand you don’t have to deal with the Thai healthcare requirement for the Non-OA version, and the long list of medical testing at home. From your home Thai consulate, apply for the Non-O 90 day visa. All the best.

Ive done both , and tbh , the retirement visa is quite a bit easier , apart from stricter financial requirements and length of seasoning rules .

My first year marriage visa is due for renewal in December and it will be interesting to see if the process is a bit smoother for my second one . Ive been told by various people that the home visit is not always required after your first visa in Jomtien Immigration , but also been told it still happens .

Malcolm Pogue you can expect the same amount of document request as last year, a 4-weeks under consideration and 95% probability of a home visit

Greg Alexander yes , I understand that . Ive met people that have had home visits and others that havent . There seems to be no rhyme or reason to it lol . I will just expect a visit .

One important thing (if it matters to you) - with a “Thai wife” extension of stay you can get a work permit if a Thai company hires you. You can’t do that with retirement visa/extension.

The process of getting a retirement visa is the same for everyone, being married doesn't make any difference. But you also have the option of getting a visa based on marriage. Most people I know choose the retirement visa as, despite it requiring you show more money in your bank account, the process is much more straightforward

I've been married to a Thai in the USA for 13 years and she has a permanent resident Green Card. It doesn't matter to immigration. They want a copy of our US marriage certificate certified by the US Government which is a total pain right now as Thailand wasn't signatory to the Apostle document treaty. They finally are, but not accepted until mid February 2027. But still a long process. I might finally do it next year, have my Social Security direct deposited to my Bangkok Bank account I have had for 20 years and not have to park ฿800,000 in my account for 5 months a year. I currently have a one year retirement extension. I've had either a retirement or marriage extension of permission to stay in the Kingdom for 20 years now, Currently it's just a lot easier to do retirement than marriage.

Zac Lashmar It's way easier have a retirement than a marriage visa. I changed from marriage to retirement a few years back.

the 1-year retirement extension is a lot easier to get than the 1-year married-to-a-Thai-wife extension. Mainly you get it on the same day you apply, whereas for the married extension you need to wait out a 4-week under consideration period, and a lot more paperwork

Greg Alexander even got that recommended by the immigration officer when my then wife (died in a motorcycle accident since) asked about it. Lots easier and a lot less hassle...I stayed on the retirement visa since, never any problems, no home visits, always got the extension of stay on the day

Greg Alexander I guess if you travel outside Thailand a fair bit, the 4 weeks under consideration would be a hassle.

For me, it's a case of spending a day getting the docs together, 2-3 hours in the local Immigration office, and hey, presto, I've got ฿400,000 less earning close to zero interest in a Thai bank.

Each to their own... Just a matter of personal choice.
