As a Canadian, is it still viable to do visa runs every 60 days?

(Enter with a 30 days visa exempt, do a 30 days extension, visa run, rinse and repeat).

TLDR : Answer Summary
The discussion clarifies that while Canadians can initially enter Thailand visa-exempt for 30 days (extendable to 60 days), relying solely on this method for an extended stay is no longer viable post-COVID. Canadians are permitted two visa-exempt entries by land per calendar year. It is recommended to apply for appropriate visas like the METV (Multiple Entry Tourist Visa) from Canada, which allows for longer stays with limited border crossings. Users emphasize the importance of compliance with current immigration regulations.

Thank You ALL for your helpful replies. I believe that the OP has OPTIONS... And the METV multiple entry tourist visa OBTAINED in his home country of Canada is a good option for him to Stay in Thailand for up to 9 months with a couple simple land BORDER BOUNCE crossing entries. We wish him success.

you got your terms mixed up a bit

a Visa Run is where you "RUN" to a thai consulate in another country and BUY a visa

where as

a Border Bounce is where you go to the border, stamp out of thailand, "BOUNCE" in-&-out of another country and re-enter thailand to get a NEW free entry stamp (visa exempt)

You're asking about visa exempt entry and canadians along with 52 other countries are allowed TWO free visa exempt entries by land in a calendar year (Jan 1 - Dec 31)

So to answer your question, NO you're not gonna live here for any length of time on free visa exempt entry stamps. Even though there is no official limit to them by air you will get pulled aside sooner rather than later and asked WTH you're doing living here on free stamps.

It is not the "let's live here on free stamps and 30 day extensions" like it was pre-covid sh*t show..

Thanks for the response. As a long-term solution, If I enter Thailand on an METV, would it be possible to do border runs every 2 months and then get another METV every 6 months in the Thai consulate in Laos when it expires?

@Toby ****
, METV is only available in the country you have legal residency or nationality.

And METV is NOT the long-term solution. Same as the Single Entry Tourist Visa, METV does NOT assure you to be permitted to enter Thailand. A tourist visa can only assure you will be stamped for 60 days IF you are approved to enter Thailand.

@Toby ****
: You would have to apply for a METV from an embassy or consulate in your home country.

no. It has to come from your home country.

Not if you plan to live inside Thailand using these visa exempt entries for short time.

Get the visa that fits your purpose and length of stay.
