Is dental treatment in Thailand still a good choice compared to the UK?

THAI DENTISTRY

Used to be dental treatments in Thailand were both cheaper and (reputably) at least as good as I could hope for in the UK.

Is that still the case?

Or am I as well to get it done back home?

Better to seek out a chain or an independent (I'm staying predominantly in Kanchanaburi Province)?

Any personal advice and or evidence based recommendations sincerely appreciated.

Please don't bother telling me I should go to Taiwan, or elsewhere.

Thanks.

TLDR : Answer Summary
The discussion centers on the quality and cost of dental treatments in Thailand compared to the UK. Users share their experiences, highlighting that dental care in Thailand is often cheaper and regarded as high quality, with many recommending specific clinics and dentists. While some have had excellent treatments, others caution about the variability in quality and recommend thorough research including consultations before undergoing procedures.

It very much depends on what your oral situation is and what needs to be done. Search for the right specialist, not just the clinic. Prices and quality vary, just like anywhere else. My choice in BKK - BIDC (Ratchada) and Truth Dental.

I'm sorry but this part made me laugh.

"Used to be dental treatments in Thailand were both cheaper and (reputably) at least as good as I could hope for in the UK"

Dentistry in most countries is better than the horror show in the UK, and I'm not even talking about "NHS Dentists" but private ones.

I get full dental checkups at the BIDH each year but there are fantastic dentist's everywhere in Thailand.

Never heard anyone who thought UK Dentistry was even vaguely good before 😂😂

- I was very happy with a filling I had there and a cleaning but I went in recently for a second filing and that one was not done correctly. I can feel a ridge on it and food is collecting on the filing ridge. I hope my US dentist can fix it because I won’t be back in Thailand for another year. 😅

Prices are up well over 100% over the last 10 years thanks to dental tourism. Still good value though. Some procedures are like crowns are about the same price as in EU.

I went to a nice place in the main shopping mall in pataya. It was cheaper than U.S.. Got some crowns and post and some extracted and some crowns replaced. I would say about a third of the price in hawaii although it is expensive in hawaii. Had a pretty good experience except all the pain i experienced on a daily basis over 5 days going everyday in the morning and getting extensive work done about 2 to 4 hours each day. Realy ruined it as a vacation as i was miserable or doped up with pain pills and sleepy everyday from pain. Couple days was able to go out and have a beer and one day rented a motorcycle and went to the old wooden shrine they have been building for years so all in all not so terrible. The one thing though on last day i had a crown installed with a post and i left the next morning and i didnt really notice that day as i was exhausted from all the work i had done and the pain and pain pills but that crown is way too tall and sticking up on side next to canine on the bottom looks like a snaggle tooth so yea be careful with what they do and make sure its good work. Another crown i got my dentist did in pataya my home dentist when i went in for a cleaning and checkup he xrayed and said that crown was full of infection and they hadnt cleaned all the cavity out only placed my crown over the infected cavity filled tooth and it had to be removed and redone and a poat put in and new crown but other work was ok except the one was too tall that tall one hit the top crowns and made them break lose and got cavity under them and eventually broke off at the gumline so im not so sure it was worth it all in all in the end. Good luck to you. It was a nice big reputable place i went also.

Sounds like a heck of a trial and tribulation. I met with parallel, if not entirely similar, experience in the UK and paid through the nose in both cash and excruciating misery for a dentist's utter incompetence. Very often, it's the luck of the draw, hence why I'm seeking advice and recommendations from those with personal experience and anecdotal evidence. Thanks for responding in such great detail. It's appreciated and a salutary lesson to bear in mind.

10 years ago I used Seasmile in Patong Beach. Go one office for clean another for root canal and another prep for crowns and fitting of crowns. Very happy with price, a little over $1000 AU/crown. Exchange rate was close to 30Tbh to $1AU at the time. No problems.

in chalong. I had doubts as my teeth are terrible. I have been there for few appointments and I wish I knew this place Sooner. The dentist and all the staff make it so comfortable and explain everything to you. I can’t praise this clinic enough. I can’t thank them enough as it’s a set price for the whole treatment

Suksan Smile in Town in Town is quite popular with farangs in the area.

They are very accomodating with foreign insurances. And all in all a good experience for me at about 30-60% less than the big ones

There are general and specialist dentists. For extractions and fillings a general dentist will do. In addition to High Street dental surgeries, your local community government hospital will have a dental department. For root canals, crowns and more you need a specialist. Prices are lower than private dentistry in United Kingdom.

Just basic (I think - but I'm not a dentist). One filling or extraction and another potential filling. Plus a tooth that half of just one side has broken off so maybe a crown or some kind of reconstruction of that one.

First time I went to a dentist in Thailand I went to my local general dentist. The lady told me my options were either extraction or root canal, post and crown. I opted for root canal, post and crown. As she didn’t do them she referred me to her friend, a specialist dentist in the next larger town. He took a look and decided he could do a filling by lowering the tooth. He stated if it breaks again we can always do a root canal, post and crown then. Unfortunately, a couple of years later the same tooth broke again. The specialist dentist told me there wasn’t enough remaining to save it and a general dentist at the same surgery extracted it. Could have been just bad luck but maybe a root canal, post and crown at the time would have saved it for longer? Since then I have had two crowns fitted at the same surgery. Cost for filling 1,200 baht, extraction was only a few hundred baht. Crown (without root canal) 8,000 baht each. Cost of crowns vary depending upon type of tooth and, of course, the material of the crown selected. My dentist gave me a leaflet about implants which can be done two months after extraction. Korean; 37,000 baht and German 40,000 baht. I haven’t had any root canals or implants.

Thanks for such a detailed account. Prices for fillings and extractions are certainly only a fraction of what I would expect to pay back home. Had root canal once. Never again. I asked for an extraction as even I could see the tooth was far too gone to fill it, but was sold a root canal, despite me saying I didn't really want one. I was too timid to put my foot down and say "no". No price or even estimate up front. Cost me £1200. As the dentist finished up she informed me there was a hairline fracture in the tooth she hadn't noticed before (I suspect it wasn't even there before) but not to worry as, if worse came to worse, it could be extracted. Two weeks of shear agony later, she advised me to have the tooth extracted (which is what I had asked for, all along). She even had the brass neck to charge me a further £150 for the extraction which is all it would have cost me if I had stood my ground, in the first instance. So I had two weeks of utter hell and an added £1200 out of pocket, just because I behaved like a pussy.

Just do your due diligence. Read reviews, get recommendations, go there and get a consultation first. Most of the big dentists in Bangkok have all their prices listed online so there won't be any surprises and you can easily compare. You get what you pay for, and someone who was trained in America won't be charging rock bottom prices.
