How many times can you get a 30 day extension per year with Visa exempt stamp? Is there a limit?
Answer summary
In Thailand, the general understanding is that you can typically receive one 30-day extension with a visa-exempt entry per visit, with the potential for a second extension of only 7 days if applied for within the same year. However, immigration practices can vary widely based on the specific immigration office and the discretion of the officer on duty. Additionally, you can make a maximum of two land border entries per year under visa exemption rules, although there is no set limit for air entries. It's also noted that some of the rules may change periodically, so it's advisable to stay updated or consult immigration directly for specific guidance.

Is it so difficult to understand that Thailand lost a lot of money by giving 60 days visa on arrival ? They want people who want to stay more than 30 days to pay for visa. They dont understand (yet) that they will loose more than they earn when people chose to go elsewhere !

As far as I understand, (tourist) extension for 30 day is once per visa or entry.

After being here for more than 180 days of a single year, you need to be tax registered and pay tax on all income local and foreign.

As far as I know it’s one 30 day extension then leave and return for a further 30 days and a final 7 day extension then something like that anyway. And I think only twice in a year. Really clamping down on boarder runs. I remember a time when monthly boarder runs were big business. Fleets of mini vans going to and from Cambodia. As long as you had enough pages in your passport you could do it indefinitely. Meant there were quite a few undesirables hanging around. Now you have to do it properly. You can come and go many times if you’re traveling back to your own country and you can pay for tourist visas.

Immigration has announced no such rule. But there is a policy that went into place about a year ago that said first extension on visa exempt would be 30 days, and 2nd would be 7 days. Actual results have varied greatly as some people get 30 days and some do not. No way to tell except to apply.

Some daft answers here. There is no official limit, but the immigration office you visit is not required to give you a second 30 day extension. They can give you a ‘7 day extension’ which is really a seven day to get out of Thailand warning.

The only way you get a factual answer is to visit the immigration office you will use and ask them very specifically if they will grant a second extension. They may or may not.

The risk of denial rasies when the number trips get the immigration officer thinking your trying to stay in Thailand on visa exempt, your on thin ice then.

• Land limit: Capped strictly at 2 visa-exempt entries via overland checkpoints per calendar year.

@Jay ******
: How long ago was the first visit this year? The longer the time between visits the less likely it is that Immigration will question your intentions. Also, you write "stamp tourist visa". Tourist visas are obtained outside of Thailand, almost exclusively in the form of an e-visa. Do you really have a visa or are you entering visa-exempt? Having a visa may make it less likely an extension will be denied or limited. Are you entering by land or air? Lot's of maybes are involved in how an Immigration Officer will view your situation, so no one can really say for sure, but you are not providing enough information in your question to help responders make reasonable responses.
Greg ***********
Greg ***********
Jeffrey A Hynds you are right - the 7-days extension was a part of the 60-days visa-exempt program. Now with the setback to 30 days, we can expect a different approach, because I cannot see why somebody would be violating anything if he spends touristic 30+30 and another 30+30 = 120 days in total, inside Thailand on visa-exemption within a one-year period
Jeffrey **********
Jeffrey **********
@Jay ******
Visa-exempt entries go back to 30 days on Sept 15th, I believe. I'm not sure if the policy of 7 days for a second-time extension applies only, or primarily, to land entries or also to air entries. As you can see, and many other responders have pointed out, information and advice varies widely. The only 'correct' answer for your situation will come from the Immigration Officer you speak with when you apply for your extension.
Greg ***********
Greg ***********
