TLDR : Answer Summary
If you have a retirement visa in Thailand that expires in September, you can typically apply for an extension of stay 30 to 45 days prior to the expiration date. While many offices allow renewals 30 days in advance, places like Bangkok, Chiang Mai, and Phuket permit applications up to 45 days early. It is advisable to handle the renewal as early as possible to avoid any potential issues.

If you get your 1year extension , do you still have to go out of the country once ?

Usually 30

I always try and get it done as early as possible to avoid any snags. In my case, it was done 45 days prior at Khon Kaen Immigration.

You can renew something like 40 days before it runs out and will run till the original runs out so 13 months or so

You’re not renewing anything. You are applying for a new extension of stay.

Most offices allow 30 days prior, Bangkok, Chiang Mai and Phuket (perhaps others) allow 45 days prior.

You could leave it until the last day of your stamp but certainly not recommended to do so.
