Tax Invoices

Has anyone bothered to attempt to recover vat tax from purchases? Someone said you do it at the airport. Or is it more hassle than it’s worth?

TLDR : Answer Summary
Recovering VAT tax on purchases in Thailand is possible through a VAT Refund scheme available to tourists. To do so, you need special yellow VAT Refund forms from participating shops, with a minimum purchase requirement of 2000 baht. The VAT refund process can be time-consuming, requiring inspection before check-in at the airport and waiting in line at the VAT office. Opinions vary on whether the refund is worth the effort, with some suggesting it’s only beneficial for high-ticket items, while others find it cumbersome regardless of the purchase.

You don't mean tax invoice, which is what companies use to claim expenses toward their VAT obligation. You mean the VAT Refund scheme. Many tourists do it. Completely routine and normal. Just make sure you know you must get the special yellow VAT Refund form from shops that participate in the VAT Refund scheme. Many shops don't, and those purchases don't qualify. Also there's a 2000 baht minimum purchase to get the form, and you must take the item out of Thailand within 60 days of purchase.

You get it inspected prior to check in

In bkk it’s at the far end past all the gates

Go in turn right go all the way to the end

Then after immigration you find the VAT office to collect your money

The line is hit or miss…it’s usually packed with Indians and Chinese with massive amounts of receipts

If you want your money you need to make sure you get there 3-3.5 hours early just for all the waiting (cat office prior to check in, check in, security, immigration, air side vat office)

DTV_Begpacker It does seem to be a lot of hassle here and why I have never ever bothered. did it in Australia and UK a few times and it was easy enough.

it depends on how much money you spent on items

I do it for big ticket items ฿100k++ this way I can get back ฿7k or more depending on the purchase amounts… this is obviously minus the ฿500 processing charge

But IMHO anything below ฿20k it’s a a hassle for ฿1,000

DTV_Begpacker When I have bought big ticket items, say over 100k, I have been living here so can not claim. When I was a visitor not worth it for as you say. for 7%. Nothing to buy here that is not cheaper elsewhere for the items I purchase.

I will disagree with you

Apple MacBooks and products lare competitively priced to the USA price with the exchange rate…so if you’re buying a MacBook, iPhone etc that’s a big ticket item so getting back the 7.5% minus the ฿500 is worth it

Those things are mobile

Watches Rolex Breitling Tissot etc are mobile and worth the refund

Plus other luxury items or items in the big ticket category…plus you can combine all your receipts into 1 refund

But to each their own…not everyone lives in Thailand full time so people come to shop on their holidays

It’s definitely not one size shoe fits all

DTV_Begpacker Watches are overpriced here. That is something I know about. Singapore is better and Hong Kong more so. The watched I have bought here were when I have lived here so do not care about the tax. I buy watches for me and to wear. PS: I have a funny story about coming in with my watches from Singapore - I used to live there before moving here. I am never buying Apple except the iPhone company supplied. Anyway I live here so do not qualify

I only used those Item’s as examples not the de facto products to buy

You live here I get it…you’re the anomaly not the norm

People come to shop on their vacations/holidays some for tax free advantage some for spur of the moment purchases

Items which can be carried out are the best for the VAT refund

But of course you’re stuck in your ways and don’t get the full breadth of the situation due to your personalized tunnel vision
