Its not post about Thailand really but if your looking to travel to Vietnam from Thailand you might be interested.

I just got back from Nam yesterday. I was lucky enough to have a mate living over there with a local account who could withdraw heaps for free (I do the same for friends visiting me in Thailand. You transfer from your Oz account to mine for free and I get what you want from an ATM for free) Vietnam is just as bad for tourists as Thailand (especially if outside Ho Chi Minh City). Many won’t work or limit withdrawals to 2-3m Dong and charge large withdrawal fees.

If you can cash up for a good exchange rate before you go, it’s worth considering.

ouch, I remember that some years ago the withdrawal fees in Vietnam were well below Thailand's (factors). Ours haven't changed of course but by your story this has given other countries an opportunity to catch up. Not great 😥

Vietnam is a bit of a special case also I think. You write about cashing up before going, which is extra important there as you can then get the preferred currency. It's just so inconvenient that ATMs do not dispense the currency that sellers ask.
