Has anyone successfully brought Thai girlfriend to Australia on a tourist visa? How hard was it? Or is there a better visa?
Thanks
Answer summary
Bringing a Thai girlfriend to Australia on a tourist visa can be challenging due to strict immigration requirements. Many users report that successful applications depend on demonstrating strong ties to Thailand, such as jobs or family commitments. While some have managed without an agent, others recommend hiring one for guidance. Rejections are common, often necessitating multiple attempts. Alternatives like the 461 visa may be available for certain partners, providing longer-term residency and work rights.

I did for New Zealand twice in one year. My partner is already well traveled, has an excellent job and plenty of assets so it wasn't a problem. NZ gave her a 1 year multiple entry..
A real, actual normal Thai girlfriend or a lady from somewhere in the entertainment industry with obvious bar English? Very easy to spot the latter..... Hopefully, a regular Thai woman with her own career and life.
Done it a few times now, not hard but takes time. Make absolutely sure you answer ALL questions correctly and provide ALL documents they ask for. Send documents to her for her to sign, scan and send back. Read carefully the request for form 956A as it might need to be form 956 instead. This is important and needs to be understood. A comprehensive covering letter detailing your relationship and why she will return to Thailand is a must. First visa will likely be single entry, then subsequent ones might be 3 year multiple entry if you request it. As long as she follows the rules while here, no work, no issues, goes home, you should be fine long term. Good luck
You never know what's actually going on , an application for my 12 year old nephew was knocked back in January 2025 , reason being they weren't convinced he'd return to Thailand and in May 2025 the application for my 20 year old niece was accepted..work that out.
It's extremely difficult for Thais to get an Australian visa ...any visa ....tourist, spouse, etc. with boyfriend, without boyfriend....and U think they have to pay thousands of dollars for bond...
Weird how hard it is. I'm a kiwi and we enter Australia on a temporary visa called a SCV with the right to remain, and work. There is a visa called the 461 visa our partners can apply for if they aren't a NZer. I applied and was granted that for my Thai partner this year, we are now living in Australia. It lasts for 5 years with the right to work and is renewable. She got work 3 days after arriving.
Go through the application process. ( Difficult,) Expect to be knocked back on the first try. I used an agent, 2 nd try, no problem . After that easy. You can apply for a partner Visa when in Aus if you want. Good luck.
If you have an isan village farm girl, not so easy. For tourist visa, they want to see something to return to, actual job or property. My wife has university degree and owns property, had good job in Thailand, approved easily for tourist visa. Many are rejected however.
Yes its easy to do my wife was able to apply for it herself with just a little help we werent married then, once here she applied for temporary residence. That was 2 years ago and now she is ver ly close to having permanent residence approved.
David Williams my partner just had residency approved 2 weeks ago but we were waiting for 5 yrs since applying. Another friend has been waiting mpre than 3 yrs. I hope you are not waiting as long as us it was very frustrating.
Nicholas Dawson yes the wait is very frustrating especially as my thai daughter has finished school in Australia now and is not allowed to work or get HECS support for university until the residency is approved. I do.know people that have had it approved after 2 years. Which is the suggested time frame given by immigration currently. My local MP has said he will assist once we reach the 2 year waiting point soon.
I was refused for a nine day visit, used an agent and currently wanting to try again… I would
Love to hear recommendations if “good agents” the application was supported by many documents and 13 year history of employment with same company…. Land ownership as well as 18 year old son. 9 days were during factory Christmas holiday period…. All the evidence and all documents…. And a refusal with the rubber stamp….”don’t believe she has a good reason to return” what a joke! Known her and visited every six months since feb 2024… application went in and decision made Dec 2025
