TLDR : Answer Summary
A traveler reported being asked at a Hanoi airport check-in desk to provide proof of funds (bank account information) while heading back to Bangkok with a soft paper visa. This prompted discussions among expats about the rarity of such checks by airlines, particularly when passengers have a valid visa. Comments shared experiences of similar requests in the past and discussed potential issues with airline regulations and the sometimes outdated or incorrect information used by check-in staff. The conversation highlighted the requirements for entering Thailand and the rights of airlines when questioning passengers.

This is just too funny and absurd . The airline staff is simply not in the position to investigate your bank account.

Vietnam is the worst when it comes to board out of there country.....

Sometimes airlines do these checks before boarding, if you have visa to certain countries, outbound ticket or everything to successfully enter. Rare, but happens. In the past sometimes they even handed over arrival cards on the plane to fill out before landing.
An airline can stop anyone from boarding if they believe they don't meet entry requirements or under international security laws

Participante anónimo 231 they have no right to "assume". They must check the written rules to determine whether you can or can't. You can always call a supervisor. There are some stupid employees at some airlines, some have even had the audacity to tell me that my country "doesn't exist", because they couldn't find in on the list 😂
This is the "refusal of transport" condition of United Airlines. All airlines would have similar terms and conditions of carriage. The airline has the rights to question any passenger as to their legal and visa status before boarding. The passenger most certainly has the right to refuse to provide certain information - but they most definitely won't be travelling
There is a minimum amount of money required to enter Thailand. It is also a fact it is almost unknown to be asked for. What looks like has happened in this case the requirements have come up on the check in clerks screen at check in and she has asked for them. The requirements are entered by back office staff and are sometimes inaccurate too or out of date. Certain passport holders are also more likely to be asked regarding certain requirements.
a few years ago, on a visa run to Myrmer the lady asked me for funds and onward ticket and I slapped a stack of crisp $100 bills and an onward ticket. She looked disapointed but stamped me in.
yeah they also asked another person who has DTV and been in and out of Thailand for a year so I’m not just the only one today

Anonymous participant As I said it is probably updated requirements on the check in clerks screen. Back office staff update these. I had one on Thai Airways from London to Singapore via Bangkok. I was living and working in Singapore and it was the return portion. The check in clerk insisted an onward ticket was required. It was not for a British passport holder. I had my Employment Pass anyway which she had no clue what it was. An airline employee who drank with us saisld that the staff updating requirements for check in staff can make mistakes or not have full info.

How did you find Thai officers in Hanoi airport?

Anonymous participant 698 haven’t dealt with Thai officers at the airport it was the checking in desk

Anonymous participant checking in desk has no authority to verify such details. They can check if you have a visa but they can't check if you still go to the soft power course or how much money you have. I think you can sue them.
I think Vietnamese immigration theoretically could check such details, but the probability is 0%. So in practice the only legally allowed people to check it are Thai immigration officers. And I believe they do it only for some reason - in more than 99% of cases they just want to see the visa and that's all.

Anonymous participant 698 Always one silly comment. Airlines have total rights to determine if someone is legally able to fly. If someone doesn't wish to comply with requests, under security laws, they will simply be kicked off the flight. Good luck suing under international airline laws! 😂😂😂😂

Anonieme deelnemer 698 Sueing an airline might not be the best idea when you want to use their services in the future.
Besides that, they can ask anything they want at check in, but you don't need to answer them.

Very strange. So the airline asked to see it? It is 20k THB or equivalent is it not for a visitor - never known it asked for though by anyone.
Anonymous participant Ok, very unusual but Vietnam seems to be tightening up it's approvals of DTV. Local airlines may have received additional instructions too regarding check in for DTVERS.

Anonymous participant I have flown them at least 7 times from Danang to BKK and never known them ask anything. As I said it will be on the instructions for the check in clerks input by the back office.
