For a Non-O Immigrant (Retirement) visa, can I enter Thailand from any country?

tl;dr: For a Non-O Immigrant (Retirement) visa, do I have to enter Thailand from the country listed on the visa or from any country?

Details: I've applied for a Non-O visa on the Thai eVisa website ([members only]/). The process was straightforward once I knew how to do it and as far as I know the documents I submitted were good.

The Australian Thai consulate says the eVisa should take 10 business days except in high season (whatever that is) ([members only], scroll down to "Attention"). Since the visa application required an arrival date and flight number I booked a flight. My departure date is fast approaching and I'm worried I won't get the visa issued in time. I acknowledge this situation is "all on me" - for brevity I'm leaving out why I chose the date and flight that I did.

Possible options:

1) Cancel the current flight, wait for the visa to be issued, rebook the flight, travel to Thailand. Question: Does it matter if the arrival date and flight number is different from that on the visa application?

2) Book a second flight out of Thailand, say to Malaysia. I think (?) this will allow me to get on the flight using a tourist visa (visa on arrival), although 1) it's not a return flight to Australia - don't know if that's a problem, and 2) it's possible Malaysia would not let me enter without an outbound ticket. Enter Thailand, wait for the visa, fly to Malaysia, re-enter Thailand on my Non-O visa, minimal stay in Malaysia. Question(s): Same question as above. Also, for the Non-O visa do I have to enter Thailand from the country listed on the visa or can I enter from any overseas country i.e. Malaysia? Lastly, Thailand would know I was in Thailand when the visa was *issued*, although not when it was *used*. Is that a problem?

3) Same as #2 but have a return flight already booked out of Malaysia. This issue is when to book that flight - I don't know how long the Thai visa would take to get issued, regardless of what the Thai Consulate says.

I prefer option #2 but definitely want to stay on the right side of Thai immigration. In typing out these options #2 and #3 seem to be risky. Option #1 and eating the rebooking cost for the flight might be the safest approach. Your thoughts?

The eVisa website does list a number at the bottom of the home page: (+66) 2203-5000. I will call them Monday. This post is just to cover all bases in case calling that number goes nowhere.

Thanks...

TLDR : Answer Summary
The discussion revolves around questions related to entering Thailand on a Non-O (Retirement) visa. Key points include that once your visa is approved, you have 90 days to enter Thailand from any country, and initial flight booking proof is generally not necessary for the visa application. Therefore, options for traveling to Thailand without stressing about the specific arrival date or original flight booking are clarified. It is suggested to stay in the application country until the visa is received.

Anser to question one is no and you didn’t really have to book any ticket for the application.

It’s always recommended to stay and wait for your visa, but option two is used by several people as backup in situations like this. The main thing is that you fulfilled the requirements when you applied, applied from your current location and can prove that you also left from this location/country.

"you didn’t really have to book any ticket for the application." The application requested an arrival date and flight number. I assumed that this wasn't just an unnecessary request for information. When I checked my desired flight and date there were only three seats left, so I had to book in order to get a seat on that flight. Had I known that this request for information is pretty much useless I would not have booked the flight. Clearly if they don't issue the visa in time I will be arriving on a different date and likely a different flight number (unless I choose option 1 and choose the same flight number on a different date).

I'll at least attempt to call the eVisa number on Monday out of due diligence but I won't be surprised if I'm no wiser after that call.

I understand, the application do request a ticket or date, but it’s sufficient to just put a date and a flight you might use. For Non O visa you normally don’t need to upload any tickets and you have 90 days to enter from the day the visa it’s issued and you’ll get stamped in for 90 days. Just did this recently myself.

Once your visa is approved you'll have 90 days to enter Thailand from anywhere

"...to enter Thailand from ***anywhere***". Thanks for confirming that I can enter Thailand on my Non-O visa from anywhere and not restricted to the country from which I requested the visa.

Thailand would know ?. You obviously assume that Embassy/Consults communicate with Immigration which they dont. One issues Visa, One enforces whats issued, they dont discuss with each other.

Many have arrived on visa exempt while waiting for their visa, then departed Thailand to nearby country and re-entered on the visa once it was issued.

Please don't obviously assume what I might obviously assume. But yes I did assume that if the Thai consulate states 10 business days to process the visa that information is nominally accurate, there is some communication between the two parties, or at least subject matter expertise on the part of the Thai consulate influenced their advice.

What I meant by "Thailand would know" is, if I entered Thailand on visa exempt on say 01March, my Non-O was issued on 05Mar, and I departed Thailand on 10Mar, then Thai immigration would know I was in Thailand when the Non-O was issued, assuming they bother with that type of search (but it could be automated when I enter later on the Non-O visa).

Anyway, thanks for confirming that "Many have arrived on visa exempt while waiting for their visa, then departed Thailand to ***nearby country*** and re-entered on the visa once it was issued."

they will not know. They don't communicate. 2 total different govt departments who don't share anything

You did not need to book any flight to apply, you could have simply looked up flights and wrote the details into your application, they dont ask for proof of book and dont check. Have done this on all my visa applications, multiple TR60, OA and my OX visa

"they dont ask for proof of book and dont check" Thanks. Clearly I should have asked for more advice here before hitting submit on my application. Here's hoping I get the visa prior to 15Mar.

You should stay in the country you applied in until the process is complete

sorry to disappoint you but the only advice you should listen to is to stay where you are. You can be called in for interview or even requested to provide copies of every page in your passport as a final step to prove you are still in the country you applied in. Basically your application is not complete until the visa is either issued or denied
