Is there some new rule that you have to take a language test to get extension for ED Visa?

My school just informed me of this today and the test is next week already.

They claim this is brand new and they didn't know before.

TLDR : Answer Summary
Yes, there is a new requirement for an ED visa extension in Thailand that involves a language test. According to a recent update, students must take a test at the Ministry of Education (MOE) after obtaining a 30-day extension following their 90-day ED visa. The test typically consists of a simple oral introduction to verify that students have been actively studying. Failing the test can result in not receiving further extensions, necessitating a full visa reapplication process.

This isn't a thai VISA question though, so I will close the comments. However if the O/P or anyone really has any questions about it, feel free to message me and I'll do the best I can to answer them.

Okay I deleted the comments 9and I honestly only skimmed them so the real answer might have been in there sorry :O )

Just before Christmas I went to the Ministry of Education with a group of students from one of the Bangkok language schools to see what the testing was like>

This came about (in Bangkok) because you go out of the country to get your 90 day ED visa and then you go to the immigration office and they give you a 30 day (yest THIRTY DAYS) extension. During that 30 days you have to go to the Ministry of Education to get "tested" to see that you've been studying for the last 3 months you've been on your ED visa. Once you "pass" that test then you can get your 60 day extensions like normal.

The test consists of an MOE staff person asking you to "introduce yourself" asking where you study, where you're from, asking if you're studying writing yet, etc.

I saw about 20 people from different schools (Pro Language, Sandee, Duke, etc) go thru the process and no one failed.

I did hear that IF you fail, they tell you to come back the following week and try again BUT if you fail that you're done and you cannot get extensions on your ED visa. You have to get new documents, leave the country and get a NEW 90 day ED visa and start over.
