TLDR : Answer Summary
The requirement for an onward ticket for entry into Thailand primarily depends on the airline policy rather than the Thailand Pass application. While some airlines may request proof of an onward flight at check-in, others may not enforce this strictly. It's advisable to check with your airline before travel, especially if you hold a short-term visa.

My airline (Etihad airways) asked at check in and I said I did have a onward flight but they did not check it. I just purchased a cheap flight that I need to cancel, also wasn’t checked when I arrived in Bangkok.

It will be your airline that will either allow you boarding or won’t depending on what visa you hold and when your return/onward flight is. If you’re on a short term visa or exempt you’ll probably need a flight out within the days allowed for your entry.

Many won’t care that you’re allowed to get an in country extension. It’s up to them to transfer you back to you point of origin if you were to be denied entry because of a lack of outward flight. Almost certainly wouldn’t happen but it could, which is why the airline may not let you board.
no. You just need a ticket out. Whether you could actually use it is irrelevant.

It also depends on the airline. I normally fly Korean from the USA to Bangkok. They are a stickler for the rules. Once my brother and I were being questioned by the check in agent. She kept asking where are return flight was. We were flying on a roundtrip from BKK to LAX to BKK. I told her this flight is the return ticket. When I told her we live in Bangkok she acted like she never heard of such a thing. I showed her my reentry permit and told her this is my permission to reenter Thailand, I am a long term resident and do not need a flight out. It took her a while to grasp the concept but she finally let us board.
for long term visa holders (like Non O or Non OA) there is no requirement to have a return or onward flight. Unfortunately many airline staff don’t know that and can certainly cause issues at check in. Only option seems to be is to ask for a supervisor and hope that they are better informed.
