Do my elderly parents need to show a return ticket at immigration when entering Thailand on standby tickets?

Hi , just a quick one, my mum and dad are coming in from dublin via doha however they get greatly reduced price tickets as due to family working for airline. my question is with Irish EU passports for less than 30 days and visa waver, do they need to show return tickets at immigration, problem is these special tickets are standby and are only usually issued a few days before return flight. they have not had any entry's here for 1.5years and as they are quite elderly I want to be sure there is no issues

thx

TLDR : Answer Summary
The main concern is whether your parents will need to show a return ticket upon entering Thailand with their Irish EU passports under the visa waiver program. Generally, while the requirement to show a return ticket falls on airlines during check-in, immigration officers in Thailand are less likely to ask for proof of onward travel for elderly travelers, especially if they have not raised issues during previous visits. It is advised to be prepared with a backup onward ticket for peace of mind, particularly since the tickets are standby and may not be secured in advance.

My 84 year old mother didn’t have proof of onward flight to Hanoi as I was waiting for her in Bangkok Good thing she was able to reach me to get the Bangkok airways flight information otherwise Cathy Pacific was not going to let her board her flight from Washington DC coming on a 30 day stamp

I am also using rebated staff stby tickets, never had problems into Thailand..neither with airline nor immigration as I am eligible to visa exempt. Just in case- i always have an backup rebate ticket and always keep an print out of my itinerary/listing. For India , as example where i need a visa i do need a confirmed booking !

Arriving in Don Muang more likely but still highly unlikely. Arriving in Suvarnabhumi should not be a problem.

To the Malesia from the Bangkok 995-2.400bht use your phone for checking tickets before arriving at the Bangkok

My brother does the same thing as his wife is a flight attendant and he's never had any issues. Immigration rarely asks for proof of onward travel unless someone is a frequent visitor that they suspect is living in Thailand illegally.

As others have said, might be an issue with the airline at check-in, might be an issue with immigration (less likely in my opinion). However, to solve both these potential issues, they can buy a cheap flight to a nearby country on one of the low cost carriers (round about £30 each) within the 30 days that their visa exempt entry would allow them.

I've only ever been asked by the airline, never at immigration. But as I'm sure someone will point put, depending on the mood of the specific immi officer on the day may decide to ask or may not, may decide to action, may not.... If I've ever had an issue at immi, I've managed to talk my way out of it. Really is pot luck

The op said they got special pricing because family work for the airline. Surely the airlines know about the standby ticket system their employees and family of employees use. Sure if it’s a regular paying customer they may question it but as it’s an airline incentive giving low prices to families of staff?

Unlikely to be asked by immigration but likely to be asked by the airline at check in - most likely in Dublin if they are checking in all the way to Thailand.

Immigration officers usually only ask those that have a history of back to back tourist visas/exempt entries because they believe the person maybe working here illegally. For an elderly couple the chances of getting asked are minimal. Could happen but very doubtful.

immigration is secondary, the first hurdle is the airline

The requirement is on the airline to ensure passengers have a transportation ticket leaving the kingdom, so that check would happen at Doha
