Hello. I recently quit my teaching job at an international school. They tell me I have 23 hours to leave Thailand. Is that true? I’m looking for visa advice. Thank you!

TLDR : Answer Summary
The user inquired about the time frame for leaving Thailand after quitting a teaching position. Respondents clarified that if on an initial 90-day Non-B visa, one can stay until expiry regardless of employment. However, if on an extension, the work permit must be canceled immediately, often requiring departure that same day or obtaining a paid extension for a week. The 23-hour urgency mentioned may be a misunderstanding, as the deadline extends to 23:59 the day of cancellation unless action is taken.

You don't have 23 hours to leave. That is wrong information or they might have wanted to say 23 o'clock. You have until 23:59 that day of cancellation to leave Thailand when you apply for cancellation and do nothing. If you need longer, you do as Tod says.

The OP said he quit so maybe the employer wouldn't be so gracious under those circumstances, why should they?

Just apply for an extension at CW, get denied and get 7 days.

If your non b visa has been cut, you need to go out from THAILAND the same day. Or the next day then you will pay an overstay which is 500. You will have a tourist visa back.

Talk to the school about this, have negotiation about the cutting because it requires cancellation letter from them. Or you might have a problem applying for your next non b visa.

is correct. A simple LAND BORDER BOUNCE will get you a new 30 day stamp on arrival plus One 30 day extension of stay at your local Thai Immigration office for 1900 Thai baht.

That gives you added time to decide your future plans.

agreed 👍. Lack of planning results in turmoil.

NOT yet. It's still 30 days as Visa Exempt Entry. Awaiting changes to be officially 60 days.

Thank you everyone.
Tod *********
you're not on any Non-B anything if you do 90 day reporting
@Tim *******
read your stamp in the passport, it says "extension of stay permitted until" you have to cancel that extension and leave.
James ********
@Tim *******
no changes in the 90 day report requirements.

I mean. Can I stay?
James ********
@Tim *******
as I see it, no.

You need to get a NEW stamp to stay.

Either by way of a Visa Exempt Entry or obtaining a Thai Visa from a SE Asia Thai Embassy or Consulate.

@Tim *******
not based on doing 90 day reporting, no. Tod has already told you what you need to do, do as he says.

The O/P is on extension of stay and has to cancel that extension BEFORE they exit the country or there is a good chance they won't get out at the land border AND they'll have issues when they go to get a new Non-B visa/extension for failing to cancel the extension correctly

@Tod ********
thanks for your helpful reply. Your the BEST 👍 Yes they must cancel the work permit and visit the Thai Immigration office before they leave Thailand.

Works like this

If you're on the initial 90 days of the Non-B visa you can stay until that runs out whether you work or not

BUT

If you're on an extension of stay (read the stamp in your passport) you have to cancel the work permit, go to the immigration office and cancel the extension and leave that day OR

buy the 7 day extension denied stamp that gives you a week to get out of the country for 1900 baht

What you can't do if you're on an extension is continue to stay.
