Someone said your second year your health insurance must come from a "approved" list. Is that true?
Answer summary
Yes, for the extension of a Non-OA visa in Thailand, health insurance must come from an approved list of Thai insurance companies. While you can use international health insurance, it must meet Thai coverage requirements and have certification. Many expats face challenges in obtaining suitable coverage, leading some to choose alternatives like the Non-O visa that does not require health insurance.

All the Thai health insurance companies turned me down because I’m fat. One told me to lie on the application.
Technically you can use health insurance from an international company or your home Country but it has to meet all of the Thai coverage limits and requirements and have a signed Thai certification form. Most immigration offices DO NOT like it and make it difficult to not use a policy from a Thai company.
My broker said, just renewed my policy each year. I decided to change to the Non-o where no health insurance is required. Why?
Health Insurance policy usability depends on the verdict of the underwriter investigation of your medical history. The exclusion list of non-coverage for me and many can provide limited coverage. Only half of me is covered, the most critical areas too! They purposefully eliminated their risk and increased mine. I asked for 50% premium discount and they went silent.
Many older expats go the ‘self-insured’ path when we ask if it’s worth paying for half coverage? We each have to choose which way to go.
I’ve set aside an emergency medical fund and eliminated risky activities. Goal is to stay out of hospital and get to know public healthcare vs private.
Yes, I was aware of that from the beginning of first policy year. I was not getting full coverage. They purposefully eliminated their risk and increased mine. I asked for 50% premium discount and they went silent.
I think the correct way to word it is: If you apply for an extension of a non-OA visa from an immigration office, you must have a health insurance from the approved list of Thai insurance companies.
