Currently in Thailand with Non O and planning to do Non OA in 2 months. As I must have health insurance as part of application requirements is it best to take the insurance now or very close to date I apply for my first 12 month extension?

Thxs in advance
Answer summary
The original poster (OP) is currently in Thailand on a Non-O visa and is considering transitioning to a Non-OA visa in a couple of months, but is unsure about when to acquire health insurance, which is reportedly a requirement for the Non-OA visa. However, responses clarify that the Non-O visa does not require health insurance for a 12-month extension. Many community members suggest that the OP may be confused about the differences between Non-O and Non-OA visas, reiterating that health insurance isn’t necessary for extending a Non-O visa. Instead, the OP is advised to focus on getting the necessary requirements for the Non-O extension and to inquire directly with immigration for clarity.

I want to do the opposite. I have an OA but want an I because I married a Thai and want to convert to a Marraige Visa. Has anyone here ever converted from an OA to a marriage visa while in Thailand or did you have to let the OA expire apply for an O and then convert to a marriage visa?

John Tidona You can't convert from an OA to a NON O inside the country. You have to leave the country and re-enter on a NON O. Or, leave, re-enter on a tourist visa and get a NON O in country.

Cool_Bananas_😎 There is conflicting information on the internet that says that you can drop the OA while you're in the country. I don't know. I'm going to ask immigration though. My Thai wife says the same as you so you're both probably right.

You seem very confused. You should extend your stay after your NON O, insurance and an OA are not required.

The answers git off track for the most part. I have my insurance policy start the same day as my visa extension. Not only convenient to get everything synchronized but I don't think that they will extend your visa past the insurance expiration date.

It is also not smart to be here with no insurance.

its interesting most people are doing the opposite as you plan to do, life insurance premium getting expensive as you age, and very when you become very senior, also pre-condition usually not covered, so why bind yourself with compulsory insurance to get OA visa? and you have to.give insurance company a lead time to process your application

It was my understanding that a OA is issued by the Thai embassy out of country, and the O is issued while in country. At least that was my experience. Got the OA in L.A. Thai embassy. After the insurance requirements were added I switched to O after returning from a trip. And I add my own insurance coverage that doesn’t need to be on the approved insurers list by immigration

Garrett Parker Hello, "...After the insurance requirements were added..."<< Was it the Thai-approved insurance that you started out with? "... switched to O after returning from a trip." <<Did you leave after your initial visit & getting the OA, using a travel permit or reentry permit? Thanks for clarifying. If you see this, I'm researching, and the OA may be my starting point. Good day/night.👋🏼

Patricia Ann Gardner really do extensive research. What is to stop them from changing the OA again, higher limits, changing policy providers, etc. I would suggest just getting the O , come into country on vacation and immediately start the O visa process
Garrett ********

Patricia Ann Gardner I was grandfathered in for my original OA and didn’t need to add insurance until I left Thailand and then the requirements would have kicked in upon my return. So I just decided to let the OA lapse and get the O when I came back. And I used a visa agent lawyer to get the job done.

NON-O and NON-OA are two different visa types. I believe you want to extend your NON-O. This does not require health insurance.

Ken Williams I think the point is that the single-entry Non-O visa is considered “used” once you enter Thailand and receive your 90-day stay stamp. After that, the extension is technically for the permission to stay, even though most people still call it “extending the Non-O.”

you don't "extend the Non-O visa". The Non-O visa became invalid when he entered Thailand. He is applying for an extension of the stay permit

Nongnuch Kamdee no he did not invalidate the Non O upon entering Thailand, he actually validated to see he got 3 months from the date of entry.

I believe that he does not quite understand what it is he's trying to do. someone I think told him that he needed to get a different Visa and that he would need health insurance for it and he's off on that tangent.

already explained to you, you were on different pathway. you are already here. and on the type of Visa you have there is no insurance requirement.

if you want to buy insurance too so. which case ask a different question.

if you're truly going back home come back on a different Visa....

just asking about when you should get the insurance, then it would be obvious that you would want the insurance to start the day before you come into Thailand. unless you have no insurance now and you want international coverage in which case you want it to start as soon as you can pay for it.

you didn't say your age. that would help on people giving you advice on specifically what type of insurance you might want or whether there are better options for you.

Bob Fom The confusion arises because many people refer to the Non-O 12 month extension as a retirement visa so the OP has joined the dots of retirement visa and 12 months and come up with Non-OA visa. This is why correct terminology is key in understanding what is required.

he said he arrived 2 weeks ago and is getting ready to apply for the 1-year extension soon. So the only thing he could have arrived on is the non-O as a non-OA is 12 months but the non-O is 90 days.

maybe post a picture of your Visa from your passport and that might clear things up.

Health insurance is not a requirement for Non-O

Work on getting what’s needed for the 12 month extension

Are you actually going to get a brand new non-OA visa, or do you actually mean you're applying for the 1-year extension of your non-O visa?

A non-OA visa is only available from the Thai embassy in your home country, so if you're going to get a non-OA visa that means you're going to leave Thailand and return home and then apply for the non-OA visa in your home country, including the required health check, criminal records check, and mandatory insurance.

If you're just getting the extension from your immigration office, you're not getting any visa. You're getting an extension, and that doesn't require insurance.

excuse my ignorance but what’s the difference between a Non O and Non OA?

Anthony Beresford as a holder of a real Non-OA, Brandon has it 100% right. A Non-O is valid for three months but comes with very few obligations. A Non-OA is valid for 12 month, can only be obtained from the embassy of your country of residence (so outside of Thailand) and it needs the health insurance. Non-O does not
Pete *******

Anthony Beresford 2 completely different animals, Non-O gives a 3 month entry, Non-OA gives a 1 year entry. Each have different documentation and financials to qualify. You are mixing the two.

Anthony Beresford basically you can only get the OA in your home country and nowhere else .

I am here on Non O which I got from Aus. Arrived 2 weeks ago, just rented a condo for 12 months and certificate of residency via the TM30. Setting up bank account and seeding with the required 800k which I believe I must have for 2 months prior to applying for 12 month extension.

Then you're not applying for a non-OA, which is a visa. You are applying for an extension based on retirement. You'll never have another visa again as long as you continue getting extensions. The visa is what you used to enter Thailand and was used and no longer valid the moment you entered.

You need to go to your immigration office and ask them for their list of requirements for an extension. They'll give you a sheet with all the requirements for your extension, so you can start to prepare for that.
Wendy ***********
Wendy ***********
Anthony Beresford you don't need health insurance for extension of non O

it probably mentions the requirements for both the non-O and the non-OA with a notation about the insurance only being required if one entered on a non-OA.

@Anthony **********
does that sheet you picked up mention insurance? If so you have the wrong sheet, you need to return to your immigration office and get the sheet containing the requirements for an extension of stay based on a Non-O visa. Do not mention a Non-OA visa as you do not have one of those.
Trevor **********
Trevor **********
Anthony Beresford Brandon has just explained this to you. You don't need to take out insurance on a non o extension of stay.
Brandon ************
Brandon ************
@Anthony **********
YOU DON'T REQUIRE HEALTH INSURANCE. You did not enter Thailand with a non-OA visa. Therefore you do not have a health insurance requirement for your extension.

Anyone that enters Thailand with a 90-day non-O visa does not require insurance to get an extension.

thanks Brendon, I have already done this, my question is on the health insurance and timing of taking out the insurance policy. Should I do now or just prior to applying for the extension?
