Flight from Phuket to Koh Samui.Check in girl,"Passport please!"."but it's only a domestic flight".Doesn't matter,no passport you not get on plane! One week later, return flight Koh Samui to Phuket.I present my passport at check in.Girl (laughing).Ting tong farang, you no need passport for domestic flight! 🙄🤪
Answer summary
The post recounts a traveler's experience regarding passport checks while flying domestically within Thailand, specifically between Phuket and Koh Samui. The traveler was asked for their passport at check-in for a domestic flight but was later told by an airline employee that a passport was not necessary for such flights. The comments discuss varying experiences among foreigners, with many affirming that passports are often required, while others mention that valid Thai government-issued IDs, like a driver's license or a pink ID card, can suffice. The inconsistency in enforcement across different airlines and situations is highlighted, along with some cultural insights into the responses from check-in staff.

Go into a Kodak shop and ask them to make you a credit card size laminated card with the main page of your passport on one side and your current visa stamp on the other side. Less than 200 baht and it then slips inside your wallet and can come in very useful

Try flying with children and car seats - everyone panics and goes into shut down mode.

Normally ends with them saying ‘solly, I no unders-tdand! You have to check them untderrrr de air-craff’

They don’t like it when you return with the full documentation from their airline supporting my claims that having them secured on board is not only okay, but also recommended when travelling with small children.

They like it even less when after they bitch to their friends about you in Thai, you give it straight back to them …. In Thai! 🤣🤣🤣🤣

Those were the days 🙈

We are foreingers so its the only identification that truly counts in Thailand not unless you have a Yellow Card and Pink ID then you can travel domestically and check into hotels without a passport.
Derek ***********
Derek ***********
In Thailand, a "yellow card" most commonly refers to the Yellow House Registration Book (Tabien Baan), which serves as official proof of address for foreign residents. Less frequently, it can refer to the "Yellow Card" immigration enforcement system used to track and warn misbehaving tourists, or the EU's historical fishing warning to Thailand.

🏡 The Yellow House Book (Tabien Baan for Foreigners)

The primary administrative meaning of a "yellow card" or "yellow book" is the Thor Ror 13 (ท.ร.13), a bright yellow house registration booklet issued specifically to foreign nationals residing in Thailand. While Thai citizens receive a blue booklet, foreigners use the yellow booklet as a formalized residency registration.

Core Benefits

Identity & Perks: It grants you a unique 13-digit Thai identification number and acts as the mandatory prerequisite to obtain a Pink ID Card (the official Thai ID for foreigners).

Local Rates: Allows you to secure Thai-national entry prices at many national parks, museums, and local venues.

Administrative Ease: Simplifies purchasing vehicles or property, setting up utilities, opening bank accounts, and getting a Thai driver's license.

Healthcare Access: Can make you eligible for local public health programs or localized Thai insurance rates.

Key Limitations

No Ownership Proof: The book only proves that you reside at the specified address. It does not serve as legal proof of property ownership (which is handled exclusively via the Chanote or title deed).

No Visa Exemptions: Holding a yellow book does not exempt you from completing your mandatory immigration 90-day reporting.

In Thailand the education system in general doesn't allow the students to ask questions. It's frowned upon as the teacher might not know the answer and the teacher looses face, which as we all know ( the ones who have been here a long time) is a huge problem in this country.

Consequintly when they get a job the same thing happens.

You need any form of valid ID for verification. From foreigners, they usually ask passport as that's a standard ID. Thai people show their national ID. After I made driving license, I show that and they are ok.

There were some headlines that went around earlier this year that were saying you would have to passports to fly going forward. Enforcement of that is likely up to the management of any location, just like everything else in Thailand.

Yes. Thai DL won't work.
Gerar ********
Gerar ********
Use my Thai DL for over 40 years without any issues with every domestic airline.

It’s officially accepted.

There was a very short period where the local government people asked for a passport so they could check the immigration status (specifically at Phuket) but that lasted only for a few weeks.
Brandon ************
Brandon ************
@Gerar *******
since every foreigner in Thailand is required to have their passport with them, you can certainly be denied boarding for failure to present it, since it's required.
Gerar ********
Gerar ********
If a foreigner is unable to present a passport (as leaving it at home) a Thai ID card or DL can be used.

CAAT rule.
Brandon ************
Brandon ************
@Gerar *******
the official CAAT policy is foreigners show passport every time. But it's down to the actual airlines who determine what to enforce.

Ray Barnhart pink ID card would be okay
Gerar ********
Gerar ********
Problem with pink ID card is the fact that the name is written in Thai language, when the airline ticket name is in roman script the pink ID card will not be accepted. (Had this with Air Asia)

A Thai DL should always be accepted.
Bas **********

Gerar Teuben exactly. That's why I prefer to use my Thai DL
Donald **********
Donald **********
Gerar Teuben Thai Airways and Thai Vietjet have accepted a pink ID card with no issues as have airport security prior to entering departures. I initially

did this as a test to see if it would be accepted. Also hotel registration has been successful although how this works with the TM30 hasn’t been questioned by Immigration.

FarangJaiDee123 I've traveled domestically plenty of times on my Thai driver's license. Just has to be a Thai-government-issued ID, otherwise passport only

FarangJaiDee123 wrong. I only ever travel with my pink card domestic in Thailand. Which is every 2nd week. Never once had a problem

Donald Campbell You cannot use a pink card for checking in to B2 hotel in Korat, it's strictly passport only for foreigners
