TLDR : Answer Summary
Yes, it's possible to get a 5-year renewal of a Thai driving license with a DTV visa, but typically you need to hold a 2-year temporary license first. Some users have reported successfully obtaining a 5-year license with a DTV visa in Bangkok, while others mention it depends on local DLT office regulations and documentation. There are mixed accounts, with some indicating that DTV holders usually qualify only for a 2-year temporary license.

The DLT regulations state for a 5 year license you must hold a non immigrant visa. I suppose it all depends how strict is your local DLT office.

It depends on the office and the documents you have.

I went to renew my 2 year licences for a second time with a month left on my ED visa. They gave me 5 year licences in Khon Kaen.

Your mileage may vary depending on the office.

But in the grand scheme of things, 2 year vs 5 year licences are not much different in terms of cost or time. You just need to get your documents together sooner.

Got a new DL in Phuket earlier this year with a DTV.

I previously held a 5-year on a different visa, but it expired and I was hoping to renew for 5 years. They told me that DTV-holders are only permitted to have temporary 2-year licenses.

Yep. Phuket, Pattaya, Rayong and some others only extend licenses for 2 years if you're on a DTV.

You shouldn't be able to get a 5 year licence on a DTV but it appears some people have been successful. I know my DLT office specifies that you must be on a Non-immigrant visa. If you login to the DLT app and make an appointment for the office you want to use it should tell you

You will also need to do a 90 day report in bangkok to get a residence certificate.

Otherwise you will need to be on a yellow book, which is not easy to get on one and it will disqualify you from VAT cashback at the airport. Either be on good terms with your landlord to go through the process or own your own property.

I've done first 2 years in Phuket and then 5 years in Pattaya, so I think it's also doable in Bangkok if nothing changed.
