TLDR : Answer Summary
The original US marriage certificate can be used when applying for a Non-O visa based on marriage to a Thai national. However, it is advisable to have it translated and certified by the Thai Embassy for future visa extensions. Confirming with the Thai immigration office will also help clarify any specific requirements.

if you go to town and are in the area of an Immigration Office, bring in your marriage certificate, show them and ask if that is good or if you need translations and certifications.

That is the only way forward at the moment.

In Thailand on non 'OA'.I will be changing to 'o' based on marriage when borders are open and know how to do this. The question is , when applying, is the original US marriage certificate ok or do I need a certified translation?

How are you planning on changing to an "O" visa? Are you planning on leaving Thailand and returning to the USA to apply for the visa,

OR

Are you planning on getting an extension of stay based on marriage?

The information in this post is very muddled to me.

1. Where are you at now? Are you in Thailand, or are you in the USA?

2. If you're in Thailand, what visa (or visa extension) are you currently on?

3. What exactly do you want? DO you want a new Non-O visa, OR do you want an extension of stay based on marriage to a Thai national?

The issue isnt how to get a visa, the issue is about whether a US marriage certificate is ok to get the visa based on marriage. Is a lawyers office translation what I'd need for example. I'd never be able to get a thai version from the south carolina issuing authority.

... maybe depends on the consulate you are applying at but I have used my UK marriage certificate 3 times to get my non O spouse visas at the consulate in Saigon. Best contact the embassy/consulate where you're applying.

. Sorry. I gave you bum steer. I thought you were going to O retirement, not O marriage. Ignore my previous comment

You do not have to change, at the end of your Admitted to stay period you visit the Immigration Office and apply for the 1 year Extension of Stay based on being married to a Thai Citizen.

. You can't change from OA to O in country. You have to wait until the OA expires, leave without getting a re-entry permit, come back on a Tourist Visa and then apply for the O at immigration office

- I've just been told that someone on a tourist VISA must do a border run to get an O VISA. But the O can be applied for at the Thai VISA office? Thanks in advance.

As you first have to register at the Thai Embassy and followed up by the procedure of getting a Certificate on Entry for Thailand, before you can apply for the visa, you have time enough to ask the Embassy.

If you like to use it later for Extension of Stay you need a translated version and certified by the Thai Embassy, best to do this directly.
