If by chance I'm asked for proof of funds (20k) on entry, will I be able to use my bank's phone app?
Answer summary
This discussion focuses on the requirement for proof of funds when entering Thailand, specifically the need for 20,000 baht in cash or equivalent. Many commenters express that showing a bank app or electronic statements is unlikely to be accepted, with cash being the preferred method to satisfy immigration requirements. Several users share their personal experiences, emphasizing that while some have been allowed entry with bank app evidence, it is generally advisable to carry cash to avoid potential issues.

Cash in THB20,000 or equivalent international currency, USD650, €550, £500.

Strictly speaking: no.

It might work, but unlikely.

Worst case you have to walk 100m back and draw cash from an ATM and pay a bad exchange rate and a horrendous fee.

Better to have a bit more than $500 in cash, and bring it back home if you do not spend it.

Why make a fuss of all this ,£500 is no Big deal so why make waves youll need 10x that value to enjoy Thailand so its not a Big Ask & Questions like this dont make it any easier to let them see it bothers people, best position is to keep Stun or next up will be 40,ooo bht .

I have seen personally one guy at immigration that showed his bank accouny. It was enough for the immigration officer.

Anyway, 20,000 is just 500 euro.

I suggest strongly carry some cash for many reasons

No. The rules were made years ago before apps existed. So before smart phones we all carried cash and even travellers cheques to travel. Many countries even didn't have atms or accept credit cards easily. So we always had at least 20k equivalent in mostly USD 100 notes. Thai immigration is still in that old world. Even when you pay for your visa extension.

It will change though in the future. It is good insurance to carry 500 USD making one less reason they can refuse you entry if you are playing the visa exempt game. We are all penalised by the lowest common denominater that Thais want to reject because of bad experiences with them. Sometimes they weed out too many and they have a criteria that is not well thought out.

Actually when Thailand introduced visa exempt 30 days it was a quite modern step to take. Prior to that everyone had to apply for a 2 month tourist visa at a Thai embassy.

Last time I entered and got pulled up because I had too many tourist stamps in my passport and I got a grilling. Officer asked me to show I had money I just brought up my K-Bank app and showed him the balance. He was satisfied. People here seem to be confused about this, proof of funds is just that, it does not mean you have to show physical bank notes, why would it?
Nongnuch ********

I advise no one, explicitly or implicitly, Suggesting one obtains destination currency at a departing airport towards said destination to avoid a red flag and open up a line of inquiry in a language you don't undertstand guided by laws you never botherd to become familiar with and performed by ever suspicious border officials in no way constitutes "advice". Call me old fashioned, but to me, where I come from, this is called common sense or situation awareness. Colin Beeley My solution after my first encounter with scalpers at airports was to hold a comfortable amount of ThB, Mexican Pesos, Brazilian Reals and US dollar reserves in my Wise account since 2017. Never have to convert anything and made the exchange work in my favor considering the drop in the value of US dollars against the ThB and other currencies in the last 9 years. I can mathematically guarantee you I have not lost any sleep (or money) by doing this. Between these four currencies ( roughly the equivalent of 500US each) I've got 2 grand of liquid, ready to spend money in four different currencies valid and tender in the four target countries I travel to the most. Not saying everyone shoud adopt this strategy, but I never stress about exchage rates at airports or cute little booths in street corners. It pays to at least think about it before joining a facebook forum for solutions to something so abvious when one travels abroad. As I said. I am in the wrong lane here. Most of the people on this thread are rookie travellers. Jut a thought.

If you're asked to show proof of funds for entering Thailand as a tourist, it's because they're already looking for a reason to deny you entry. The regulations state that it must be 20,000 baht or equivalent in another major currency, in cash only. You will likely not be given the opportunity to show bank app, credit or debit cards, or bank statements. They want to deny you entry, so they're not going to make it easier for you to get around that.
