Can I use a fixed deposit account to show sufficient funds for a Thai marriage visa extension?

Hi, just looking for a quick confirmation prior to switching funds (extension to stay based on marriage). When I come to renew the aforementioned visa next year, is it ok to have the required funds in a fixed deposit account? (The type of account you can immediately withdraw from but lose your interest if you do) I remember reading here that this was ok.. but not ok if it’s an account where you cannot withdraw. TIA

TLDR : Answer Summary
Yes, you can use a fixed deposit account to show required funds for renewing your marriage visa extension in Thailand, provided the account allows for immediate withdrawal (even if you lose interest). Immigration offices like Chang Wattana and Khon Kaen have confirmed this practice. However, fixed deposit accounts that do not allow access to funds until the term is completed are not accepted.

usually there are two types of "term deposit" accounts you can have at a thai bank. One is where you tie up the money for a specific period of time BUT you can access it if you need to (even though you'd lose interest and get a penalty). <- That account is FINE to use for proof of funds for extensions

Another type is where you tie up the money for a specific period of time BUT you can't access the money until the term of the deposit is done. <- That account is NOT fine to use and immigrations won't accept it.

thank you Tod. I think I remember you saying this before. But it’s extremely reassuring to hear you confirm this prior to me making a very important decision. Money moved at 1.5% per year. Pays half the rent. Great job Thanks 🙏

Khon Kaen immigration also told me you could hold the funds in a foreign currency in a Thai bank , accompanied with a bank letter showing the exchange value

it’s in Thai Baht; I just remember someone saying it had to be the type of fixed account that you could withdraw instantly if needed as opposed to one where it’s locked in and therefore unavailable.

Yes it is ok at Chang Wattana.

I used this method 2 weeks ago for a retirement extension, and have done so for the past 4 years
