But we would like to go with a different bank, can we just transfer the 800,000 to the new bank and not be penalized

TLDR : Answer Summary
The user inquires about transferring the required 800,000 THB from Bangkok Bank to another bank while holding a NON-O visa. Comments suggest that while there is no prohibition against changing banks, it is recommended to transfer the funds in increments of 400,000 THB to maintain compliance with seasoning requirements. Key advice includes waiting until after the 800,000 THB has been in the original bank for the required duration post-extension before transferring and ensuring the balance doesn't drop below 400,000 THB afterwards.

I did this 3 years ago with no problems

As Tod says transfer it as two 400k sums a couple of days apart (ckeck receipt of the first before transferring the second) but to be really safe I would do this after you have met the 800k for 3 months after the extension was granted
I transferred mine from KTB to SCB bank in 49,000 lots after I renewed my stay for another year, had no problem at all, took a few transfers, as a foreigner can max 50,000 transfer, unless facial recognition is made

There is another thread on this group that just asked the same question recently so see if you can't find it. I'm not at the PC so I can't link to it.
There's nothing to prohibit you from moving to another bank account however with that being said, I would move it in 400k increments so that you keep the seasoning requirements at one bank until you get that same amount in the next bank and then move the balance over.
There's nothing in the rules that says you have to do this, but I always err on the side of caution..
The other thread got closed down because it devolved into a how can you move money into thailand, what about the Bangkok Bank 4 month frozen account policy they recently implemented.
None of those things had anything to do with visa advice so let's not let this thread turn into that.
Remember the seasoning of funds for banked money method retirement extension is:
You need 800k in a Thai bank account in your name only for 2 months before you apply for the extension
The 800k stays in the bank account for 3 months after the extension is granted
Then the balance can never go below 400k the rest of the year.
shouldn't be a problem but immigrations have been know to give people a hard time who move the money to a new account, same bank or different bank doesn't matter to them
