Can I switch from an O-A visa to an O-X visa while in Australia and what are the renewal options?

I am currently on my first O-A visa, and it expires in January 2024. I know I can renew / extend it for another year, but I cannot see the cost and whether I can continue to renew indefinitely? I return to Perth Australia next week for a daughters wedding, and will be there for around 5 weeks. I am wondering whether it might be better to apply for an O-X visa from the Sydney embassy while I am in Perth? This would in theory give me at least 10 years (5+5). I like the fact that my money can stay in Aus, like with the O-A, where it can earn interest. Can the O-X be further extended, or do you have to start with a new visa application? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

TLDR : Answer Summary
The user is currently holding an O-A visa set to expire in January 2024 and seeks information about renewing it indefinitely and the possibility of switching to an O-X visa while in Australia. Insights suggest that the O-X visa can be applied for at the Thai Embassy in Sydney, which allows funds to remain in Australian accounts, earning interest, and offers a longer validity of up to 10 years (5+5 years). Users also mention the LTR visa and recommend consulting with knowledgeable individuals in expat communities for further clarification.

Wayne Roberts got his OX visa from Sydney...

Agreed ๐Ÿ‘ the OX Visa available to you from the Thai Embassy in Sydney Australia is perfect for you.

How to get it is problematic..

As you NOW have a valid OA visa for retirement in your passport. Good thru January 2024.

Suggest you ask the Thai Embassy in Sydney IF they would ALLOW you to apply for the OX Visa while you are in Australia?

If not... then a special Trip back to Australia is likely to Apply for it AFTER your current OA VISA expiration date in January 2024

At this time, the OX Visa issued by Sydney Thai Embassy is 5 + 5 years.

Beyond that we have no information.

BUT to get 10 years visa NOW is perfect for you.

MEMBERS... The Thai Embassy in Sydney Australia has unique financial requirements NOT seen from any other Thai Embassy or Consulate worldwide. They have NO need to deposit money in a Thai bank account. It CAN be in your Australia bank accounts the entire 10 years.

thanks that is what I thought, and was just looking for confirmation. I did wonder how they would treat the existing O-A visa situation. I think they will go for the money, cancel my O-A and issue O-X, but I will need to check.

hopefully they will...but I don't think they can. ASK and then you will know. In any event, get the OX Visa even if it requires you to make a return trip to Australia in January 2024. A 10 year visa is ideal for you!
